Liverpool Chinese New Year 2020 Celebrations – What’s On Guide

We’ll be welcoming the Year of the Rat during the Liverpool Chinese New Year 2020 celebrations in the heart of Chinatown this Sunday.

You’ve probably already noticed thousands of Chinese lanterns adorning the city centre as we prepare to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Sunday 26th January. And as the first established Chinatown in Europe you can guarantee we will be celebrating in style.

Like we’ve seen previously, a number of buildings including Central Library, The Cunard Building, Liverpool Town Hall, St George’s Hall, World Museum Liverpool, Everyman & Playhouse Theatres, Liverpool ONE and the Mersey Tunnels George’s Dock Building will be illuminated red in honour of the festivities, signifying good fortune and joy to everyone.

The celebrations begin at 11am on Sunday 26th January, blending Chinese cultural history with contemparary elements to bring a mixture of street and stage performances, aerial displays by the Black-e, family workshops, a fairground, Dragon, Unicorn and Lion Dancer parades, firecracker displays and of course the popular Chinese market on George Street selling gifts, souvenirs and mouth-watering food.

The Family Zone (Great George Square) will be hosting activities for all ages including a Paper Folding Workshop with Pagoda Arts, a Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Workshop with the Everyman Playhouse & Liverpool Confucius Institute, Chinese Zodiac Badge Making with Spiral Arts. There will be Street Performances from Movema Dance (at 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00), The Black-e Youth Circus and 24 Festival Drums.
