10 Films You Won’t Want To Miss At FACT And The Everyman Cinema This December

Winter is upon us. Snowball fights, cosy fires, hot chocolates with marshmallows and cream, but what should we watch on the big screen? 

Fear not as the festive film season won’t let you down. Liverpool’s best independent cinemas, FACT’s Picturehouse and the Everyman cinema are showing a multitude of must-see films this December. Let’s dive in.

Top 5 Upcoming films showing at FACT’s Picturehouse

FACT’s Picturehouse is the place to be next month, home to screenings of: Fallen Leaves, Eileen and Wonka – you won’t want to be anywhere else.

1. Fallen Leaves

Combining Finland and Germany with comedy and drama, Aki Kaurismäki brings you Fallen Leaves. The filmtells the story of two lonely individuals, Ansa (Alma Pöysti) and Holappa (Jussi Vatanen), looking for love living in Finnish contemporary capital, Helsinki. Their paths inevitably cross in a karaoke bar – leading to misplacements, mistakes, alcoholism and an endearing stray dog which all play a part in their story along the way. However, their chance meeting does not necessarily give them the happy ever after they’ve been waiting for.

2. Eileen

Starring big-screen favourite – Les Misérables’ Anne Hathaway – this mysterious drama/thriller (based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s 2015 novel by the same name) set in 1964 Massachusetts, follows local youth prison secretary Eileen Dunlop (Thomasin McKenzie). Eileen’s developing friendship with new colleague, Rebecca (Anne Hathaway), takes a turn for the worse as a dark secret unravels…

3. Femme

Thrilling drama, Femme, brought to you from Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping, centres around the life and career of drag queen, Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett). Jules is unfortunately subject to an awful homophobic attack. Time goes on and Jules meets one of his attackers, Preston (George MacKay), in the most unlikely of places – a gay sauna. After this chance encounter, there is only one thing on Jules’ mind… revenge.

4. Wonka

This fun-filled fantasy adventure is perfect for all of the family! Directed by Paul King and based on Roald Dahl’s 1964 classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka tells the story of the well-loved and eccentric chocolate-maker, Willy Wonka (Timothée Chalamet). Adapted into a musical, this whimsical and other-worldly escapade takes you on a journey alongside the character at the heart of the classic story, in order to understand how he became the best inventor, magician and chocolatier in all of the land.

5. Earth Mama

Savanah Leaf’s quasi-documentary style drama, Earth Mama, draws upon her own experiences with her sister who was in foster care. The story follows young pregnant mother, Gia (Tia Nomore), who has two children in care. Gia’s caseworker urges her to be aware that her unborn child may go into care too, which drives Gia to put an end to her dilemma and reclaim control of her children’s future. Due to the brutal system, she sees her only choice to be adoption. Covering sensitive topics, this film is a representation of real-life struggle.

Top 5 Upcoming films showing at the Everyman Cinema

The Everyman cinema is putting on a good show this December. With screenings of Napoleon, Wish and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé – you’re guaranteed to want front-row seats to all of these titles coming soon!

1. Napoleon

Joker’s star actor, the captivating Joaquin Phoenix, plays the title character, Napoleon Bonaparte, in this historical drama charting the rise and fall of the French Emperor himself. Stellar filmmaker, Ridley Scott, brings this piece of history to life starting from Napoleon’s humble beginnings in Corsica all the way to his global power. Not only does the film follow his road to international reign, it illustrates his psyche throughout to understand his tumultuous voyage through love, war and power.

2. Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé

Calling all members of the Beyhive, the Everyman presents… the Renaissance World Tour film! This film follows Beyoncé herself on her record-breaking world tour from the opening night in Stockholm, to the final show in Missouri. This documentary-style film demonstrates Beyoncé’s contribution to every single detail of the production and her masterful performance skills on stage. Make sure to watch on an opening weekend at the Everyman, to receive a film poster to take home with you!

3. Trading Places

The Everyman is showing plenty of throwbacks this festive period, including this 1983 comedy/thriller starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd as protagonists – Billy Ray Valentine and Louis Winthorpe III. Screening as part of the cinema’s ‘Late Nights’ season (10pm), Trading Places, tells the tale of a pretentious investor (Louis Winthorpe III) and crafty street-con artist (Billy Ray Valentine) who are forced to undergo a role-reversal after the result of a bet between two insensitive millionaires.

4. Wish 

To celebrate 100 years of the much-loved franchise, Disney’s newest animation, Wish, follows 17-year-old Asha (voiced by Ariana DeBose) living in the magical kingdom of Rosas, a witty optimist who finds out just how powerful her wishes can really be as they come true – thanks to a cosmic force called Star. Alongside Star, Asha ventures into a courageous quest to face the evil King Magnifico (voiced by Chris Pine), who greedily keeps wishes for himself, leaving none for his people. This is a family-friendly fantasy film with a beautiful message – if you believe in yourself, your dreams will come true.

5. Elf (20th Anniversary)

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Christmas classic, beloved holiday favourite, Elf, is screening at the Everyman this December! Hallmark of comedy film, Will Ferrell, stars in this festive title as Buddy the ‘elf’. On Christmas Eve a long time ago, baby Buddy crawled into Santa’s sack of toys… Brought up as an elf, Buddy of course loves all things Christmas. But as he grows older, he comes to terms with the fact that maybe he doesn’t truly fit in with the other, much smaller, elves in the North Pole. The story follows his adventure in the Big Apple, as he discovers who his real family is and embarks on a mission to save Christmas.
