YMCA Together Supports People Experiencing Homelessness As The Temperature Drops In Merseyside

As temperatures plummet across Merseyside, YMCA Together is urging the community to support people experiencing homelessness.

The freezing weather which is set to get worse towards the end of the week, brings further challenges to people sleeping rough with temperatures expected to be below zero during the night.

Liverpool’s City Council’s Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) is in operation and emergency accommodation is available. The UK Health Security Agency has also put a Cold-Health Alert in place, which highlights the possibility of significant impacts for the health and social care sector.

YMCA Together is committed to providing warmth, shelter, and essential resources to people experiencing homelessness during the cold months.

Ellie McNeil, Chief Executive of YMCA Together, said: “As temperatures drop, our commitment to supporting people experiencing homelessness becomes even more critical. Cold weather can really impact people who are sleeping on the streets and can lead to hypothermia. It is really important that people get the help and support they need. Support to come indoors through the cold weather period and access to health care can help to massively reduce the impact of the weather.

“Alongside our partners, our teams are working tirelessly to make sure that people know that we can help them with accommodation and that they have warm clothes, food and drink available to them.

“We would ask people to look out for anyone sleeping on the streets and check on their welfare. You can call the SWEP outreach team on 0300 123 2041 on their behalf.”
