Red vs Blue: Three Memorable Merseyside Derbies In Recent Premier League History

The Merseyside derby is one of the most eagerly anticipated matches all year, both for the red and the blue side of Liverpool. While in recent years each side has found themselves at differing ends of the table, the Premier League fixture has produced some thrilling displays, that you can learn more about at https://sport.dk/.

Everton 2-2 Liverpool (17 October 2020)

In a game where Liverpool entered as champions and Everton boasted legendary manager Carlo Ancelotti at the helm, this Merseyside derby was always going to be a classic. It got off to a flier too, with Sadio Mane putting the visitors ahead on 3 minutes before Michael Keane equalised in 20 minutes. Mo Salah restored Liverpool’s advantage partway through the second half, before Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s strike just nine minutes from time rescued a vital point for the Toffees.

Just a few years on, and both teams have started the season poorly. Everton in particular has suffered a lacklustre start to 2022-23, which sees them sit 17th – just a point from the relegation zone – which has slashed manager Frank Lampard’s odds of being sacked to just 1/2 on football betting sites. The ex-England international was appointed in January 2022 but is yet to see any significant improvement with his side less than a year later. Liverpool, meanwhile, has seemingly recovered from a sloppy start, as they rose to sixth by the turn of the international break.

Liverpool 5-2 Everton (4 December 2019)

There’s no mistaking Liverpool’s performances in December 2019, however, a season at the end of which the Reds were awarded their first Premier League trophy. Klopp’s side made a statement against Everton at Anfield, with early goals from Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri, which were soon pulled back by yet another derby goal for Keane. Liverpool took control again shortly after, with Origi grabbing his second on the half-hour mark and Mane getting into the action a minute before half-time. Richarlison set up a potentially nervy second half with Everton’s second just before the break, but the Reds used their home advantage to full effect, putting out a real champions’ defensive display in the second period. A Gini Wijnaldum goal put the icing on the cake for Klopp’s men to make it 5-2, capping off what was certainly a day to forget for Everton, but a goal fest which lives long in the memory of the Anfield faithful.

Everton 3-3 Liverpool (23 November 2013)

Everton may have only won one Merseyside derby since October 2010 – a memorable 2-0 victory in October 2020, their first at Anfield – but they came mightily close back in 2013-14. Then under the management of current Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, Everton cancelled out a Philippe Coutinho opener with a strike from Kevin Mirallas within eight minutes, before Luis Suarez restored Liverpool’s advantage ten minutes later. Second-half strikes from Romelu Lukaku – his second coming just eight minutes from time – appeared to have secured a memorable victory for the Toffees.

Liverpool had other ideas, however, with Daniel Sturridge stealing an 89th-minute equaliser to leave Goodison Park stunned. Brendan Rodgers’ side would challenge the Premier League title until the last few games that season. Defeat at home to Chelsea – including Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip – and a draw with Crystal Palace – having been 3-0 up on 79 minutes – gifted the league to Manchester City, who won only their second Premier League title on the final day.

As club football takes a break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, both Everton and Liverpool will have players resting and ready to feature in 2023. The second Merseyside derby of the season will take place at Anfield on 11 February, which the city of Liverpool is undoubtedly already looking forward to.
