Liverpool Film Office Celebrates 35th Anniversary With Incredible New Showreel
Liverpool is rolling out the red carpet for film fans worldwide as Liverpool Film Office marks its 35th anniversary with a breathtaking new showreel, celebrating the region’s starring role on screen.
Produced by award-winning Liverpool-based LA Productions and curated by renowned creative director Chris Bernard – whose debut film ‘Letter to Brezhnev’ premiered the same year the Film Office was founded – the showreel captures the magic of Liverpool City Region on film over the past 35 years in just over two minutes.
As the second most filmed UK city outside London, Liverpool has long been a favourite among filmmakers and film enthusiasts alike. With its striking architecture, historic docklands, and stunning coastal and countryside landscapes, the city region has doubled for locations across the globe in countless blockbusters and TV dramas. Now, film lovers are invited to step into the scenes of their favourite productions and explore the city’s cinematic landmarks firsthand.
The showreel is a centrepiece of VisitLiverpool’s screen tourism campaign, ‘The Ultimate Setting’, launched in collaboration with VisitBritain’s ‘Starring GREAT Britain’ campaign. By showcasing Liverpool City Region’s diverse film locations, the campaign aims to inspire visitors to walk in the footsteps of their favourite stars, from Hollywood blockbusters to beloved British classics, exploring the region’s visitor offering along the way.
Featuring scenes from productions Peaky Blinders, The Batman, Florence Foster Jenkins, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Doctor Who, and a Taylor Swift music video, amongst many more, the showreel highlights the breadth of filming that has taken place across the region.
Closing with the slogan ‘The World in One City’, first coined during Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008, the showreel invites audiences to discover why Liverpool and the wider region is the ultimate setting – both on-screen and in real life.
Over the past five years, Liverpool’s Film Office has helped bring in £168m of investment to the local economy, supporting 1,564 productions and creating more than 5,279 full-time equivalent jobs. This success not only cements Liverpool’s reputation as a world-class filming destination but also enhances its appeal as a must-visit location for film-inspired travel.
Managing Director of Liverpool City Region Destination Partnership, Natalie Wyatt said: “Liverpool City Region’s film heritage is something truly special, and this showreel is a powerful way of telling that story to the world. We know that film tourism is a growing trend, with visitors increasingly seeking out destinations they’ve seen on screen.
“This showreel and wider campaign will highlight Liverpool as a must-visit location for film fans, giving them the chance to experience the magic of the city region for themselves.”
Head of Liverpool Film Office, Lynn Saunders said: “It has been fantastic working with Chris and the team at LA Productions to create our 35th anniversary showreel.
“Our showreel is the culmination of the Film Office’s hard work and dedication over the last 35 years to put Liverpool at the forefront of screens across the globe.
“The focus for my team is to continue to drive inward investment to the Liverpool City Region, working to build a stronger and more diverse skilled screen workforce in the region and promoting best practice in sustainability within our sector. It’s been a privilege working with some of the world’s finest talents both on screen and behind the camera.
“The future is bright for the film and TV industry in Liverpool and we cannot wait for what the next 35 years of Liverpool Film Office may bring.”
VisitBritain CEO Patricia Yates said: “Our research shows that more than 9-out-of-10 potential visitors to the UK are keen to visit places used in filming and seen-on-screen and it’s great to see Liverpool launching this showreel as it marks this anniversary, harnessing the powerful draw of screen tourism to put the region’s fantastic visitor offer centre-stage.
“It’s also timely as we roll out our international Starring GREAT Britain campaign. Using films and TV shows as the hook we’re telling the story of our dynamic and diverse destinations such as Liverpool, inspiring people to put themselves in the picture and book a trip to Britain right now, driving visitor spending into local economies.”
