Hushtones Cement Their Musical Style With Recent Releases and Impressive Live Shows

Hushtones are a retro alt-pop band from Liverpool fronted by Martha Goddard and Mick Campbell, the two lead songwriters, alongside Caitlin McPaul on Bass, the band creates varied songs with soaring, playful melodies and a smooth blend of male and female voices. Inspired by the likes of Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles and Kate Bush as well as more modern artists such as Sunflower Bean, Arcade Fire and Wolf Alice. Joined by drummer Abraham Tesfachristos in the summer of 2018, the music was given a punchier rock’n’roll energy, followed by newest member Joe Dillon providing a blues-rock feel.

All of these elements combined allow Hushtones to create a unique sound. A combination of retro feels and modern elements with songs ranging from chill-pop to punk rock to psychedelic alt-pop.

Hushtones released their debut home-made EP in late 2018 selling out their launch show in Sound Food and Drink in Liverpool. After the success of the EP, they were given the opportunity to record new music in a studio in Glasgow with Ciaran McIntyre of Electric Kitchen. They have now released a new double a-side featuring the songs Heart On Your Sleeve and Open Your Eyes.

Heart On Your Sleeve has already received interest and airplay from BBC Radio Merseyside and others. The song has been described as: “nearly four and a half minutes of melting together a changing love dynamic with a compulsion to sway.” A song about supporting a partner to the point where they feel they’ve outgrown you and the feeling of frustration and irony that comes with this.

“The words drip with honesty and wit. Add soaring vocals and fat white family-esque guitars and you’ve got a summer highlight.”

Open Your Eyes is a tranquil companion to Heart On Your Sleeve. A song about enjoying the moment and not wasting the precious time we have been given doing meaningless repetitive tasks. Written by Mick Campbell with help from Martha Goddard, this has always been a sentiment of the two lead song-writers.

“There you go, let the time float away. Let it go. Now you know that it’s real.”

Hushtones’ next gig is Bitch Palace Presents at Phase One on 26th September – Facebook Event Page
