Things to do in Liverpool

Black Hole – End of Time Immersive Show Is Back By Popular Demand

Black Hole – End of Time returns to Old Christ Church in Waterloo, Liverpool, this November. After wowing audiences in 2021 and 2022, the 2023 show promises to be bigger and better than before.

The brainchild of Liverpool lighting designer and musician, Paul Alty, Black Hole – End of Time is a lighting and laser show like no other. Using over 14 lasers and several high-powered projectors mapped across the church, the 30-minute immersive show is set to an ear-tickling soundtrack. Alty says, “If the show is new to you – where have you been? The keyword for this year’s show is ‘more’! We’re turning the volume up on everything!”

The show is set around a black hole –  a real black hole that floats, ominously in the middle of the church, whilst the air buzzes as laser beams dance around it and white fluffy clouds swirl at your feet.

The performance creates a multi-sensory experience that delves into the mysteries of the cosmos. Video projections swirl around you, inviting you to explore the enigmatic depths of a black hole. This art installation challenges the boundaries between art and science, inviting you to consider the infinite possibilities of the cosmos and the impermanence of all things.

Back for a second year is Alty’s visual collaborator, internationally award-winning visual artist, Rocco Helmchen. Helmchen designed stunning projections for the 2022 show and is providing all new projected visuals for 2023.

Comments from previous audience have said, “Wow! What an amazing evening!… At one point made me feel I was falling towards the black hole itself!… Stunning, hypnotic and mesmerising… Best performance in my entire f**king life! This is beyond imagination…That was a bit special.”

The show is on over three nights, Friday 17, Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 November, running several times per night. Tickets are available from Eventbrite.

This year’s show continues to support two charities, the Friends of Christ Church and Backup Tech, the live events charity, with technical support being provided by Liverpool-based production company, Adlib.
