UK’s First Revolving Theatre Planned For Liverpool
Plans to develop a new creative district at Liverpool’s North Docklands could include the UK’s first Stage-Around Theatre performance space.
The proposed theatre venue is based around a similar space in Amsterdam where the revolving auditorium (seats move around the stage) is designed to give audiences “a genuinely immersive experience”.
The city’s plans to turn the docklands area into a creative quarter with the likes of venues such as the Invisible Wind Factory and Drop the Dumbulls already located in the developing district, will see creative businesses taking over the area dubbed as Ten Streets. The docklands space is also the new home to Liverpool Sound City Music Festival who will be celebrating their 10th Anniversary of the festival at Clarence Dock in May.
The Ten Streets plans were unveiled last week by Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson at the Titanic Hotel. The area is crying out for regeneration with the foundations laid by early investors in the area like the Invisible Wind Factory. It is predicted that the regeneration will create 2,500 new jobs.
Mayor Joe Anderson said “For me, this new theatre says everything about our ambition for Ten Streets and how the creative sector can unleash the untapped potential of these once celebrated docklands and make them once again a beacon of economic growth.”
The Ten Streets area includes 125 acres of dockland between Costco and the Titanic Hotel. It sits next to the Liverpool Waters regeneration scheme, which could also include a new football stadium for Everton FC.
Mayor Anderson said: “The launch of this vision for the Ten Streets district is an opportunity of a lifetime to define Liverpool’s future as a creative powerhouse of the 21st century.”
Public consultation has been opened on Ten Streets, as Liverpool City Council and development partner Harcourt Developments seek to build momentum for the project.
