A crack team of ginthusiasts have spread their wings from London to the North, to quench all your juniper cravings in your own backyard. Brief former ‘Masterchef’ contestant – Leon Dalloway, originally spearheaded the London tour, updating the time immemorial pub-crawl with a little sophistication. The result? A pleasing night – a perfect way to discover unseen parts of your own city and try a lavish weekday remedy: Rhubarb Gin!
Our inebriating pilgrimage starts a little closer to home, at the palatial Oh Me Oh My. We step through the door and the seasoned and vibrant, gin guardian Cocktail Kate welcomes us in with raconteur Nick for an introductory meet & greet with our fellow drunkards. As the chitchat dried up, they tactfully launch into fun & informative talks upon the elderflower liquor we found ourselves sipping on, dropping in quirky tidbits of fact, varying from the berries used by the plague doctors to the alcoholic usage of the baobab tree from the African plains.
As we finished educating our palettes, we hopped onto our supplied minibus and found ourselves snaking around the city on a whistle-stop tour, from Ropewalks to the Baltic Triangle. As we were all merrily caught in a desperate bid to win free bottles of gin, our distillery and prohibition knowledge being thoroughly tested – the breaks screeched to a halt. Before we knew it the bus had arrived at Botanical Gardens, and we’re herded off the carriage, and huddled around a sloe gin concoction with stories of drunken Benedictine monks to listen to.
The heady night continued on, we flew off to such speakeasies and haunts such as Filter & Fox, Red Door, and finally Jenny’s, where the tour concluded, and the team was privy to have a little nose at the in-house shop, ‘Whiskey Business’ and their wide collection of international spirits, including such delicacies as Japanese Bourbon.
A great all around experience for friends and couples of all ages, and due to it’s burgeoning popularity it’s recently opened the doors for a Saturday tour for your weekend convenience! If you fancy something similar in a different city, the gang are steering the gin ships around Edinburgh, Leicester, Manchester and it’s original Gin jaunt – London.
