10 Films You Won’t Want To Miss At FACT And The Everyman Cinema This January

What better way is there to kick off the new year than to take a trip down to the cinema to watch some new films? If you want to start 2024 off right, look no further than FACT’s Picturehouse and the Everyman cinema.

1. One Life

Based on a true story surrounding the life of London broker, Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton (Johnny Flynn), One Life lets us in on his rescuing of 669 children from the Nazis in the build-up to World War II. Fifty years on from his visit to Prague where he saved the fleeing families desperate for help, Nicky is still living with guilt, stuck on the fact he couldn’t save every one of them. Little did he know, his guilt’s saving grace would be found just sat watching television – when a live showing of BBC’s ‘That’s Life!’ appears on his screen, it is only then he finally begins coming to terms with the five decade-old guilt he’d been feeling, as the programme showed surviving children (now adults) of the war.

2. The Taste of Things

FACT is treating Liverpool this new year, to a special early preview of Trân Anh Hùng’s new romance/drama film – The Taste of Things. If you’re sad Christmas is over and are still in the festive spirit, FACT has got you covered with a free mince pie and a glass of mulled wine (or a drink of your choice) when you buy a ticket for this title.

A story exploring a passion for good food which gradually blossoms into romance, The Taste of Things follows the relationship between unparalleled cook, Eugenie (Juliette Binoche), and renowned gourmet chef, Dodin (Benoît Magimel). Eugenie has worked for Dodin for twenty years, across this timespan their friendship develops, as does their admiration which soon turns into infatuation. This strong bond combined with their passion for gastronomy, inspires them to create their best dishes together, impressing even that of world-famous chefs. Despite things going so well for the pair, the only difference among them is their desire to get married, as Eugenie likes her sense of freedom. In an attempt to change her mind, Dodin makes a romantic gesture he’s never done before – he decides to cook for her. But is this enough to turn things around?

3. Next Goal Wins

Based on 2014 documentary of the same name, Next Goal Wins is a light-hearted comedy directed by Academy Award nominee, Taika Waititi. True underdogs, the American Samoa football team, squandered the worst loss in World Cup history. When Australia beat them in 2001 with the game finishing on a score of 31-0 – they managed to set a new, yet embarrassing world-record for themselves. Thirteen years later, they are still refusing to give up, so much so they bring a new coach in with a very different approach to what they’re used to… They take a chance on non-conformist, bad-tempered, Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) who just happens to also be rather hapless. Just when things aren’t looking promising, the team realises Rongen’s coaching might just be the start of their redemption arc.

4. Ferrari

Michael Mann’s new thriller set in the 1950s, tells the story of struggling car entrepreneurs, Enzo (Adam Driver) and Laura Ferrari (Penélope Cruz). A troubled pair, their marriage is on the ropes as they struggle to cope with the recent loss of their son, Dino. This situation is even more complicated, as Enzo has a son with another woman, Lina (Shailene Woodley) whom he doesn’t know how to acknowledge. On top of this, the bankruptcy they face is hanging over their heads, as the fate of the 10-year-old company they built up from the ground together, lies in their hands. Due to Enzo’s passion for motor racing, he decides to risk it all in an attempt to claim a cash prize for winning dangerous 1,000-mile race across Italy – the Mille Miglia – in the hopes of saving him and his wife’s business.

5. Priscilla

Priscilla tells the real-life tale of the iconic yet ill-fated love story between rock-and-roll legend, Elvis (played by Jacob Elordi) and actress/businesswoman, Priscilla (Cailee Spaeny). In this romance drama, Sofia Coppola’s take on their romance shows the unseen side of the well-known marriage from Priscilla’s perspective. After meeting Elvis at a party, she sees a completely different side to him in private moments together – not only did she admire him in a romantic sense, he was also her best friend who shared everything with her and saved her from feeling so alone. A heartfelt mosaic of love and fame, Priscilla tells the story of her marriage to Elvis through her eyes.

1. Anyone But You

Starring hit series Euphoria star, Sydney Sweeney, the much-anticipated rom-com, Anyone But You, tells the story of a burning romance that soon fizzles out into nothing but frostiness… Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) initially go on an amazing first date, but the flame quickly dies out and things immediately turn sour. By a not so serendipitous accident, of all places for their paths to unexpectedly cross again, they just so happen to reunite at a luxury wedding destination in Australia. Putting up a front to keep up appearances, they pretend to be a couple – not the most fitting of relationships for them, but definitely in the most fitting of locations. This line between fact and fiction soon begins to blur throughout their complex pretence, growing into a genuine connection for each other…

2. Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom

Sequel to Aquaman (2018) and 15th instalment in the DC universe, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom sees the return of the ever-persistent Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) who is thirsty for revenge, as he puts Atlantis under threat once again – this time with a new and powerful weapon, the mythical Black Trident. Aquaman (Jason Momoa), eager to save the oceans, turns to desperate measures – his imprisoned brother Orm (Patrick Wilson). Battling through a race against time, Aquaman must put his and his brother’s differences aside, in order to save his people from irreparable damage.

Everyone loves a good old throwback, including the Everyman, who are screening the much-loved musical this January, The Greatest Showman! Including complimentary popcorn and a drink of your choice, this family-friendly, fun-filled screening is a celebration of show-business and the true visionary, P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman). Unravelling his journey from humble beginnings to becoming a worldwide entertainer, The Greatest Showman brings Barnum’s life to the big screen – showcasinf his creation of the Barnum & Bailey Circus and the lives of its star attractions.

4. The Three Musketeers 2: Milady

5. Poor Things

From the filmmaker who brought you The Lobster (2015) and The Favourite (2018), Yorgos Lanthimos now brings us fantasy sci-fi title, Poor Things. Produced alongside Emma Stone who also stars as main character Bella Baxter, Poor Things focuses on how she is brought back to life as an outwardly appearing grown adult, yet is internally still a child, by her creator – non-conventional scientist, Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Curious about the world around her, Bella has a hunger for learning about the way things work. As she crosses paths with debauched lawyer, Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), together they embark on a hectic journey across the continents. No longer tied down by the prejudices that were around in her times, Bella becomes firm in her beliefs and purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
