In Conversation – Tom Code (Adventure Code)

Adventure Code, led by founder Tom Code, has become a thriving community dedicated to exploring the great outdoors and embracing the mental, physical, and social benefits of hiking. In this interview, Tom discusses the inspiration behind Adventure Code, how nature positively impacts mental health, and the rewarding moments that have come from building a supportive community.

He also shares insights into the exciting hikes the group undertakes, including the upcoming Everest Base Camp trip, and offers advice for anyone hesitant to take their first step into the outdoors.

Liverpool Noise: Can you tell us about the inspiration behind founding Adventure Code? What motivated you to start this community group?

Tom: So, the motivation for me starting Adventure Code kind of began on the back of previous years. I had spent years solo hiking and running in the mountains, and I began to realise just how much of an impact being in that environment was having on my overall wellbeing. Physically, mentally & spiritually. Especially with living in the city, I really began to see how beneficial getting out in the mountains was for me and then I witnessed the positive affects it had on friends who had joined me on odd days out too. Seeing this for long enough, I knew it was something I wanted to share with more people, which led me onto doing the training required to lead people out into the mountains. As soon as I started taking small groups, I knew instantly this is what I was meant to be doing.

Liverpool Noise: In your experience, how does spending time in nature positively affect mental health and overall wellbeing?

Tom: I find that spending anytime at all in nature instantly boosts your mindset and overall well-being. Being outdoors helps me feel less stressed, improves my current mood, and provides a sense of calm by allowing me to escape the hustle of daily city life. Whether it’s a walk in the park or hiking in the mountains, the fresh air and natural surroundings help clear the mind and relax the soul quickly. I feel the difference from a leisurely walk in the park to hiking up a mountain.

Hiking is more of a greater physical activity, add that with being outside in the mountains, it adds that extra benefit by improving fitness, which then positively impacts both body and mind. There is so much more freedom in the mountains, it’s a lot quieter and a lot of the time, there isn’t much phone signal.

Being out in nature demands you to be present, you have no option but to focus on all your senses, you’re dependent on your sight, your smell and your hearing. It naturally creates an experience where the senses take over and you leave behind the distraction of day to day life and really feel and enjoy the experience in the moment.

Liverpool Noise: What are some of the benefits you’ve noticed among the community members who regularly participate in these hikes?

Tom: Adventure Code hikes have had a powerful impact on building friendships and boosting confidence within the community. When people are taking on hikes together it instantly encourages collaboration and support, people become a team quickly as they are all sharing both the challenge and rewards of the journey. These shared experiences help create deeper connections and a sense of belonging. I’ve watched so many people grow inside of the community, seeing people originally come on their own pretty nervous, to then coming frequently and making new real friendships and going on their own adventures together.

There’s so much growth in coming on your first Adventure Code hike, facing and overcoming personal challenges and then the obstacle during the hike gives a sense of personal achievement, empowering and boosting their self-confidence. The blend of a safe and enjoyable day with plenty of laughter and growth creates a positive, supportive environment that extends beyond the hikes themselves.

Liverpool Noise: Have you seen the community evolve since you started? What have been some of the most rewarding moments for you as a leader?

Tom: For sure. The community has evolved very organically, by bringing people together through fun shared experiences and a welcoming vibe. As more people join in, friendships form and everyone supports each other, making it a boss space to be part of. It’s great to watch because you see people becoming more confident, making new friends, and just enjoying themselves.

The way it’s evolving shows how much people can grow and connect when they’re having a good time together. There really is so many amazing stories that I’ve witnessed now, we’ve watched so many people go on huge transformational journeys within their lives. We’ve had a 2 people meet on a hike, who then got married and had a baby together, which is incredible. We’ve watched numerous people go on holiday and nights out together, we’ve seen people truly turn their life around for the better. The Adventure Code community is filled with so much positivity. It really is a dream to watch and be a part of.

Liverpool Noise: You have loads of different events like the National Three Peaks Challenge, Lakes 10 in 10 Challenge, the Ben Nevis hike and you’re going to Everest Base Camp in November! Do you have a personal favourite hike that you’ve done so far?

Tom: This really is a tough one to answer! Each experience we have is so unique, it’s hard to pick a favourite. Every challenge and trip offers something special, whether it’s the people, the scenery, the challenge itself or the sense of accomplishment. They’re all amazing in their own way! However, our international trips do take things to a whole new level, bringing even more excitement and adventure. I think the fact that they’re booked almost 1 year in advance, there’s a journey going on before we even get to the airport. It really isn’t just about the mountains we hike, it’s the moments in between, and the experiences we share along the way that make every trip truly unforgettable.

Liverpool Noise: Tell us a bit about the Everest base camp trip, it sounds incredible! You also did a raffle for one lucky person to win a place on the trip for like £33 a ticket. Will there be other raffles like this in the future do you think?

Tom: Well, we had some fun with this one for sure. So yes, we decided to do a last-minute raffle which was £33 a ticket, for a chance to win a trip to Everest Base Camp. We hadn’t done anything like this before, but we thought why not. It was really enjoyable doing it for sure, it opened the door for everyone to potentially be able to go to EBC. And the guy who won, still can’t believe it’s true. But yes, we loved it and I’m sure we will do one again soon for a trip in 2025. So, keep your eyes peeled.

Liverpool Noise: What message would you like to share with those who might be hesitant to join a group hike or just getting out into the great outdoors?

Tom: I’d say if you’re hesitant about joining a group hike or stepping into the mountains itself, know that it’s a welcoming space where everyone is there to enjoy and support each other. You don’t need to be an expert or have all the gear, just bring a positive attitude and a willingness to explore and connect. The natural beauty, friendly company, and sense of accomplishment are well worth the initial nervousness. I can almost guarantee that 90% of the people who are now regulars in the community where once nervous or hesitant about coming their first time. But the moment you’re there, you will instantly realise how relaxing the environment is. Give it a try and see how refreshing and rewarding the experience can be!
