Waiting Till Marriage Set To Release Latest Single ‘Oh My Love’
Oh My Love is the upcoming single from Liverpool-based band Waiting Till Marriage (consisting of vocalist Adam Johnson, guitarist Brandon Tew, Liam Brady on bass and Ieuan Kearney on drums), to be released on 2 September. This comes following the band’s emergence in June 2021, and four single releases to date (their latest – Three Times – being released under Liverpool-based label Jacaranda Records). Operating within an indie pop / rock realm, the band have cited that they are influenced by world music, as well as artists including Peace, The Vaccines and Rex Orange County.
Oh My Love starts out with a layered picked electric guitar section, captivating the listener immediately with its spiralling pattern. The drums kick in and introduce us to the punchy, upbeat rhythm section driving much of the track’s groove, which brings to mind the earlier work of Two Door Cinema Club. The upbeat instrumentation is met with lyrics which discuss feelings of self-doubt within such a competitive industry: “I swear you’d read it in the papers, that your own show is not worth your time”. There is a duality to Johnson’s lead vocals – reminiscent of Paul Smith of Maximo Park – which are emotive and theatrical, yet powerful and energetic.
There is an almost eighties feel evoked through the melodic slap bass present within the verses, an element which brings a unique, unexpected flavour uncommon within much contemporary indie pop / rock music. The chorus’ departure from the main rhythm brings a sense of release to the tension built through the track in previous sections, which will have you head-nodding to the rung-out, crashing cymbals. Lyrical content seems to indicate a search for reassurance from inner doubts: “Oh my love, where do we go?”
The energy is kept up throughout the three-and-a-half-minute runtime, reaching a peak as the bridge’s double-time feel hurtles the track toward the final chorus. The overdriven guitar briefly veers into an understated moment of bent, almost discordant notes, before reigning in to a tight melody. Although perfectly arranged within the single format, it is easy to imagine this section truly taking off and extending outwards within a live scenario.
Oh My Love is certainly Waiting Till Marriage’s best release to date and a track that will be stuck in your head for days, joining an impressive musical catalogue that the band have been building over the past year. Despite being early on in their musical career, there is clearly a bright future ahead for the young band, as they continue to cement their presence within the Liverpool music scene and beyond.
Fans of indie rock / pop, and the likes of artists including The Wombats, Peace, The Macabees, Courteneers and The Strokes will be sure to love this track and all that the band have to offer! Make sure to check out the band’s new single when it is released on 2 September, ahead of their largest headline performance yet, taking place at the Arts Club Loft in Liverpool on the 24 September.
