Two Iconic Traders Bid Farewell To Duke Street Market – But There’s Exciting News
Duke Street Market, the vibrant culinary hub at the heart of Liverpool, is preparing for an exciting new chapter this February. As part of this evolution, they bid a fond farewell to two iconic traders who have been an integral part of our market’s journey.
Duke Street Market has become synonymous with exceptional service and top-notch food and drink offerings. Housed within a meticulously restored 100-year-old warehouse, the market has become synonymous with a warm and inviting atmosphere, offering a distinctive communal dining experience.
This month sees a change in food offering at Duke Street Market, with both traders Picar and Barnacle due to leave the market on Sunday 23 February. Barnacle has been a part of the market since December 2021, offering gastro-inspired classics and key British staples.
Barnacle will be reopening soon in a brand-new location, keep an eye on their social media for more details. They released the statement below last week.
Statment from Barnacle: “It’s with nerves and excitement that we announce we will be hanging up our aprons at @dukestreetmarket as Barnacle’s street food kitchen concept closes on Sunday 23rd February, and as we approach our final service we wanted to take a moment to share our thoughts with you all.
Since 2021, we’ve been fortunate to be part of this great food community with humble beginnings as a restaurant concept serving up international dishes with the greatest produce grown, harvested and sourced all within the Liverpool city region.
We received recognition in the Michelin guide within 6 months of opening and created countless memories with both our amazing team members and wonderful customers. Your support has meant everything to us.
Following some economic challenges and after struggling to allow our identity to shine brightly in the shared food market venue, we were forced to make the decision to reduce the size of the team and turn into a street food kitchen. This was one of the toughest things we’ve had to do, but it has allowed us to weather the storm and now there are some exciting changes on the horizon!
Whilst we are bidding a fond farewell to Duke Street Market, this isn’t the end – it’s a new beginning for Barnacle. We’re evolving into something bigger, in our own premises, which we will hopefully be announcing shortly.
Drop a comment with where you think it might be? Think… standalone restaurant and bar that will take us back to our roots…
Also, keep your eyes peeled for the return of the Barnacle Container in Spring 2025, and of course FOLLOW us for updates about our new, permanent, home.
This weekend is your last chance to enjoy our street food menu at DSM. Come say hello (and goodbye, for now) – we’d love to see you! Thank you for being part of our journey so far. Here’s to the next chapter 🥂 Fingers crossed for fair winds and following seas…
Love from
Harry, Kieran, Liam, Allan, Connor, Henry and of course Paul”

While Picar offered a fresh twist on traditional Spanish cuisine with its small plates concept. Both have been fantastic additions to Duke Street Market, becoming much-loved traders over the years.
General Manager Anne Murphy states, “Over the years we have thoroughly enjoyed working with both Picar and Barnacle, and they have brought so many amazing dishes to Duke Street, truly showcasing the talents of both kitchen teams. We wish Picar and Barnacle the very best in their next ventures. While both kitchens will be missed, we are thrilled to welcome our newest trader, who is sure to create an exciting buzz across Liverpool.”
Picar and Barnacle will bid farewell to Duke Street Market on Sunday 23 February. They invite guests from near and far to join us in celebrating their journey and giving them a proper send-off.
