The Pentatonic Presents; Live At Maguire’s Review
The evening started with Drew Connor providing some earthy vocals and sweet acoustic guitar to die for. With Simon Fletcher on lead acoustic and Drew himself on vocals, the melodic set included ‘Stay on Your Feet’ and finished on ‘Hypocrisy Democracy’, a sobering and heartfelt song about the society we live in.
The next act had travelled all the way from Amsterdam to bring her lo-fi excellence to Maguire’s. Pip Blom and her band are currently touring the UK and stopped off in Liverpool to bring the audience tracks such as ‘Taxi Driver’ and ‘Honey’. Easily the best act of the night in a line up that had plenty of talent on offer.
Pale Horse brought their in-your-face music and a large crowd of fans to the venue. They had a lot of rock flourishes and dead-pan vocals. Easily the favourite with the crowd. With a single, ‘Amphibian Baby’, recently released, the band are on the up.
Hushtones were a much quieter and more thoughtful proposition. The music was quite beautiful and the band played some great tunes such as the excellent ‘Give Me A Reason’; a lovely end to the evening.
The first gig in what is to become a monthly happening, the evening brought together some stunning talent. Maguires has a special atmosphere, not just brought on by the special pizza and reasonably priced beer. The Pentatonic Presents gigs look set to become a valuable addition to the live music scene in Liverpool.
