Grunge Maestros The Cubical Hope To Reach New Heights With ‘That Ain’t No Way To Get High’.

After a long hiatus, the maestros of rock n roll garage blues and Liverpool-based band, The Cubical, are back with a vengeance as they’re set to drop their highly anticipated single That Ain’t No Way To Get High.

The single is due to be released on 4 October and will feature on their forthcoming fifth studio album, Cut Me Like a Hog, which will be available on all platforms November at the earliest. The single and album announcement marks their first studio offering since taking a hiatus in 2017 after the release of critically acclaimed album Blood Moon.

True to form, The Cubical deliver a ferociously intense sound on the new record with Howlin’ Wolf-esque vocals, machine-gun drumming, and piercing guitar solos. The band’s trademark rock n roll intensity is expertly refreshed, maintaining their enigmatic and rhythmically hypnotic essence that has solidified their reputation across Europe, making it hard to believe they were away for so long.

Alongside That Ain’t No Way To Get High, fans can also get a taste of the new album with the live B-side Barry’s Mid Life Crisis which was recorded in Arnhem at The Brigant.

The Cubical is made up of Liverpool natives Dan Wilson (lead vocals, guitar), Alex Gavaghan (guitar, piano, vocals), Johnny Green (guitar, harmonica, Mark Percy (drums, vocals) and Craig Bell (bass). Their 2009 debut album, Come Sing These Crippled Tunes, was recorded at Hollywood’s Sunset Sound Studio, and was produced by the Grammy award winning Dave Sardy (who has also worked with the likes of Oasis, Johnny Cash and Primal Scream).

A Cubical live show has been likened to a “rock n roll medicine show,” an assault on the senses. Not only are your eyes glued to the chaotic dancing of the 6 foot five Wilson, indefatigable Gavaghan and charismatic hard man Green but the interwoven Telecaster twang, wailing harmonica, incessant pounding bass and drums, are all topped off by one of the gruffest and most distinctive blues howls which ensures audiences are drawn into the hypnotic intensity that is so central to The Cubical experience.

The five Liverpool natives have also had the privilege of playing alongside the likes of Bob Dylan, Kiss, The Black Lips, Blondie, Chris Isaak and, their music idols, The Magic Band. Back in July the band performed at Carnival Brewing Company alongside The Living Brain and The Stamp. With a new single set to be released and a new album on the horizon, a brand new tour should certainly be on the cards.
