A Royal Afternoon Tea At Queen Avenue’s Abditory

A ‘hidden’ bar on Liverpool’s Queen Avenue will be offering the once aristocratic tradition of enjoying afternoon tea to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty’s ascension to the throne.

This quintessentially elegant British custom of taking afternoon tea will of course come with a twist – the tea itself will be in the form and taste of a delicious Earl Grey Sour cocktail – and as many as you can drink!

Abditory, between Castle Street and Dale Street in the city centre, has created a Bottomless Afternoon Tea for the Jubilee weekend, Thursday June 2 – Sunday June 5, for people to raise a glass or more to Queen Elizabeth II.

The ever-popular Earl Grey tea with its heady bergamot aroma has long been associated with aristocracy and nobility since the 19th century and a 2010 survey found that a significant number of British people associate drinking it with being “posh”. These days it has become a very popular way to mark a special occasion.

As a cocktail, Early Grey takes on a different appeal with its wonderful light citrusy flavour coupled with an ermine like froth that is exceptionally easy to drink and the best ‘cuppa’ ever sipped.

Every afternoon tea comes with a light bite and this will be no exception with finger sandwiches, clotted cream and strawberry jam scones, sausage rolls and other pastries and an assortment of fancies. And if an Earl Grey cocktail is not your cup of tea, then Gin and Tonic, Prosecco and cold beer are also on the drinks menu.

Adam Keegan, Operations Director at Lucky Penny, owners of Abditory, said: “It’s not quite a right royal knees up but this is definitely an appropriate way to mark this landmark date. There will of course be plenty of bunting, fairy lights and flag waving in our ‘secret garden’ setting.

“Abditory has become well known for the majesty of its cocktails and the Earl Grey Sours are no exception. It’s everything you want in a drink. It’s refreshingly delicious and gloriously velvety and a perfect way to relax on the long Platinum Jubilee weekend.”

Abditory’s Bottomless Jubilee Afternoon Tea runs from Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June between 12 and 3pm. It costs £30 per person for 90 minutes and can be found at Lower Ground B, 22 Queen Avenue, Liverpool.
