Ron’s Place: Birkenhead Flat of Artist Granted Grade II Listing

A humble flat on Silverdale Road, Birkenhead, Wirral, has a truly fascinating story. The flat known as Ron’s Place, has earned the prestigious Grade II listed status after a campaign from passionate supporters. This accolade stands as a testament to the extraordinary artistic journey of its former resident, Ron Gittins.

For over three decades, Ron Gittins poured his creativity into transforming his living space into a mesmerising realm inspired by the ancient civilizations of Greece and Egypt, among many other inspirations. From lion-shaped fireplaces to floor-to-ceiling murals depicting mythological scenes, every corner of the flat radiates Ron’s boundless imagination.

The discovery of Ron’s hidden haven came after his passing in 2019, when his relatives stumbled upon his remarkable legacy. Thus began a passionate campaign led by the Saving Ron’s Place group, with support from notable figures like Jarvis Cocker, to preserve this cultural treasure.

Historic England’s decision to grant listed status to Ron’s Place is a nod to Ron Gittins’ unparalleled artistic achievements. Sarah Charlesworth of Historic England aptly describes it as “a remarkable project” that celebrates the intersection of art and heritage.

The significance of Ron’s Place extends beyond its aesthetic allure. In 2023, an anonymous benefactor stepped forward to purchase the property, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Now, Ron’s Place is poised to become a hub for creative arts programs, promoting both artistic expression and mental health awareness in the Wirral community.

Reflecting on the newfound recognition, Jarvis Cocker expresses the sentiment shared by many: “Ron’s Place is a very special place.” Indeed, it serves as a beacon of inspiration, reminding us of the transformative power of art and the enduring legacy of one man’s vision.

For Jan Williams, Ron’s niece, the listing is a poignant tribute to her uncle’s creativity. She believes Ron would be overjoyed to see his work appreciated and cherished by generations to come.

In the eyes of Historic England, Ron’s Place stands as an exemplar of Outsider Art—a testament to the unbridled creativity that flourishes outside the confines of traditional training and mainstream recognition. It is a reminder that art knows no boundaries and that true brilliance often emerges from the depths of individual imagination.

As we celebrate the listing of Ron’s Place, we can not only marvel at its beauty but also honour the spirit of its creator—a visionary whose artistry continues to captivate and inspire.
