Novelty Island ‘Taped Over’ EP Review

Following the release of his single 1102, Novelty Island (aka multi-instrumentalist and producer, Tom McConnell) is set to release his next psychedelic-pop EP, Taped Over

A companion record to Wallsend Weekend Television, also recorded during his time at Abbey Road Institute, Taped Over is the awaited addition into McConnell’s imaginative, sonic world.

It’s a sound that could easily be praised for its dreamy melodies and solid progressions but instead takes it that bit further with small details in every open space. Each track differs in its creativity and tone introducing new soundscapes and dynamics as it moves along, but as the EP comes to an end its clear how the tracks are intended to unfold, merging as one dreamy trip.

The EP is an amalgamation of influences notes McConnell, from Brian Wilson’s unreleased SMiLE to Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love, echoes of which are heard in the opening track Thinkin’ Things’ drumbeat. Whilst references to the famous four who contributed Abbey Road’s prestigious title are also evident in McConnell’s raspy vocals and kaleidoscopic, acid-dream tinted sound, the fellow Liverpudlian has carved his own name in the synth-pop world with these eight new tracks.

Highlight Hotspur is a relaxing antidote to life beyond the four walls around us, and perhaps McConnell’s most experimental track on the EP production wise. A hypnotizing synth floats above the track disappearing and re-emerging throughout, with haunting soundscapes and vocal samples moving in and out of the forefront. The track leaves this mellow comfort momentarily, changing tempo for a 00s-esque piano/string section before effortlessly placing us back where we were.

These carefully sculpted sections deliver insight to McConnell’s use of production as a key instrument throughout the EP. While Taped Over evokes emotions and connects with its listeners it also takes us on a journey of exploration and creativity. As each track closes with the sound of a cassette changing sides, McConnell prolongs the nostalgic presence of the EP, a generous factor in its alluring quality.

Leaver’s Assembly is the penultimate ballad leading into the albums final track and lead single. Presenting McConnell’s vocals at the forefront, a gentle melody sweeps him into a higher vocal register accompanied by the tranquil sounds of a seashore a 12 string acoustic.

Taped Over is the second release in a trio of EP’s with the third set for release next year. Taped Over is released via Nine x Nine Records on 2 February.

Watch Novelty Island live at his next home show as part of his UK tour on the 9 February at the Kazimer Stockroom in Liverpool with Whelligan and Thom Morecroft supporting.
