Food and Drink in Liverpool

New Restaurant & Bar Nova Scotia Opens This Week

This weekend, Liverpool’s newest restaurant is opening to kick-start the big Jubilee bank holiday weekend. Nova Scotia is coming from independent Liverpool bar operator Ma Pub Group, led by Iain Hoskins, and opens from 9am on Thursday 2 June at Mann Island.

With an investment of £250,000 and 50 new jobs being created, the new venture will utilise the extensive open-air drinking and dining space as well as a beautiful interior restaurant and bar which looks out to the Museum of Liverpool and the city’s world-famous waterfront.

Every day of the week from 9am to 9pm, Nova Scotia will serve great breakfasts, lunches, small plates, hearty mains and delicious deserts with a wide range of drinks and signature cocktails. Dishes include a range of brioche and egg brekkies and full English options; six Nova Burgers including PS Scotia, Marco Polo and Royal Charter; sandwiches and Dockside Hotdogs; and mains including Traditional Scouse, Fish and Chips and a healthy Rainbow Salad. On the bar side, Nova Scotia’s Signature Serves include Jamaica Street and Sea Brow Iced Tea to a classic NS Old Fashioned and French Martini cocktails. There’s a wide selection of wines and draft and bottled beers too.

Set in the stunning Mann Island building in the shadow of the World Museum and the spectacular Three Graces on Liverpool’s iconic waterfront, the new location will capture the city’s maritime past. It’s little known that at the end of the 19th century, the Mann Island area was previously a shanty-town called Nova Scotia, made up of dwellings and businesses serving the huge ships when the city boomed as a trade destination. The dock served Canada and the ‘lumber’ trade, twinning with Nova Scotia in Canada – there is also a Canadian Liverpool, River Mersey and Mann Island.

Iain says: “It’s a tremendously exciting time for Ma Pub Group and we are thrilled to be opening our third venue this weekend. On top of this, we have discovered this incredible history about the area, when the dock area was a shanty town. It’s quite mind-blowing really and we want to help tell this story as part of Nova Scotia. We feel Mann Island is a perfect fit for us, operating two neighbouring bars locally we know the area very well. We’re looking forward to a fabulous summer in the city, and opening our doors for the Jubilee weekend feels right. We have a world class waterfront and it’s an absolute privilege to be able to open a restaurant here.”

Despite the many challenges the city has faced during the last two years across its hospitality sector, customer confidence is back. Iain’s two venues are busy once more and the sense of optimism is returning across the city region in time for the summer.
