Musician Feature; Edwin Pope’s Alter Ego 'Mutant Vinyl' Combines A Number of Musical Aspects
With a successful list of musical names associated with him, the young musician shows off a truly varying musical persona. Having supported for the likes of Rudimental, Rita Ora, Kids In Glass Houses and many other high profile musical acts in just the past two years, Mutant Vinyl is proof that doing things a little bit differently can really get you noticed in the music world.
Receiving heavy airplay on BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music, as well as being tipped by Radio 1 DJs, his music has gone even further afield, entering the Europe and US music scenes. Pope experiments with dubstep and electronic sounds whilst drawing on aspects of jazz, as fronted by his saxophone playing. A unique musical performer, there are no questions as to why he’s been creating such a buzz.
Track ‘Lavender’ could easily deceive the listener into thinking it is an electronic track from the opening but it soon incorporates jazz notes, giving an unlikely twist. Not only can Pope sing and mix electronic beats, he can also wield a saxophone, creating a rather modern sound. The song has a catchy rhythm making it an interesting and unexpected treat.

Latest track ‘New York Dub’ really captures the essence of the Big Apple. Pope assembles such a hum of electronic beats, acting as a symbol for the bustle of the city and its thriving nightlife. Perhaps the most dance of all of his tracks, this could quite easily be belted through the speakers in city clubs.
Even older songs such as ‘Acid Honey’ combine striking musical elements. Pope’s voice is mysterious and captivating, melding well with the delicacy of the electronics and jazz sounds. If his current songs are anything to go by, Mutant Vinyl undoubtedly has quite a stage presence. Complimented by Sir Paul McCartney himself, these tunes are not to be missed!
