Abundantly Optimistic: Naomi Campbell’s ‘Across the Waves’
Naomi Campbell’s latest single, Across the Waves, from her upcoming debut EP, has made a glowing impression on the North West’s rising artists’ music scene. Nostalgic and optimistic, its skilful composition is an inspiring preview of her EP, Bridges, dropping in November.
Celebrated for her “warm, beautifully structured songs”, Campbell draws influences from a wide range of genres and musicians, including Dolly Parton, George Harrison and Stevie Nicks. Having evolved her sound throughout her career, from Irish Folk roots, most evident in her early work, to a more Soul-based style today, Campbell’s discography is dynamic and eclectic.
She has gone from strength to strength since her debut single, Tuesday’s News, released in March 2024, supporting touring artists such as MT Jones and making festival appearances, including Focus Wales. She has gained further recognition through airplay on Radio X and live sessions performed at BBC Merseyside.
Providing a fascinating insight into what’s to come from her debut EP, Campbell released singles The Cottage and Comfort of the Breeze earlier this year. Both songs are evocative and soulful, showcasing her exceptional capacity for storytelling at the heart of each track. With an air of 70s Country and Americana about her work, it offers a promising glimpse into Bridges.
Released on the 2 October, Across the Waves foregrounds Campbell’s flawless vocal control and melodic lines. The introduction to the single is soft and enticing as the sliding guitar pulls listeners in. As the song develops, so do the harmonies, which work seamlessly alongside the guitar that propels the track. Additionally, with several Rock elements appearing on Across the Waves, it transports listeners to another dimension, one that imitates the feel of the 1970s.
A song built around optimism, this is demonstrated in various components of the track. Whether it’s the twinkling sound of the guitar at the end of the single, or the bright melody that defines the chorus throughout, Campbell weaves this positivity throughout her latest release. This is made clear during the chorus: “And I see some light and it’s coming back to me now / Across the waves / Across the waves / Across the waves”, as it nods to feelings of abundance and fulfilment.
Campbell will be promoting her soon-to-be-released debut EP with three intimate performances across Liverpool, Portstewart and London this November. With the release of her exceptional singles from Bridges, each breathtaking in their own right, Naomi Campbell is an artist not to miss out on.
