Bethane On ‘Homebird’, Finding Confidence And Her Youth Music Awards Nomination

With soulful vocals, layered harmonies and songwriting rooted in real experiences, Liverpool artist Bethane makes music with heart. Her debut single Homebird has earned a nomination for the Original Track Award (Solo) at the Youth Music Awards, marking a special moment ahead of her debut EP in 2027. We caught up with her to talk about finding confidence, the community that helped her grow and having big dreams while being a homebird.

For someone discovering you for the first time, how would you describe your music?

I’d describe my music as soulful and honest. A lot of what I write comes from my own experiences and real things I’ve been through and seen.

Sonically, I loveeee a good bassline and so many layers of really pretty harmonies. I think it’s really cool to take audiences on a musical journey, so some of my songs are just me and piano, too.

If you really love Amy Winehouse, Cleo Sol and Yebba, then I think I’m your girl 😉

Your song Homebird has been nominated for the Original Track Award (Solo) at the Youth Music Awards. How did you find out, and what was your first reaction?

Honestly, I was soooo shocked when I found out! I had no clue I’d even been put forward. I remember I was actually in a studio session when the email came through and I did a little scream!

Homebird was my debut single and it has such a special place in my heart, so the fact that it’s been nominated is soooo special to me. 13-year-old Beth would be so proud!

Homebird explores the pull between feeling at home and wanting to go further. What was happening in your life when you wrote it?

Yes, exactly that. I think Homebird came from a period in my life where I was really learning to embrace who I am. It’s about being able to be shy and a homebody, while also finding the confidence to put yourself out there and take up space.

It was a really transformative period for me, both as an artist and as a person, and I was starting to realise that being comfortable and confident in yourself can take you further than you ever imagined.

You can still be a homebird and have big dreams. You can rise, grow and go wherever you want to go.

The awards are being held in Liverpool this year. What does it mean to have your song recognised in your home city?

It’s honestly so special to be nominated, never mind for it to be in my home city. ‘Homebird’ has always been a very Scouse word to me and my family, so it feels really full circle in a way.

I’m also so excited for everyone to experience Liverpool because it’s such a special city. There’s so much love, pride and care for each other here, and I really hope everyone who comes gets to feel that too.

Youth Music lists Merseyside Youth Association alongside your nomination. What role has that support played in your development as an artist?

Noise has been imperative in my life, not only as an artist but as a person. I started going when I was 17, and it really supported me throughout my musical and artistic journey.

I met so many of my collaborators and became part of such a supportive community. It helped build my confidence in so many ways, and I genuinely wouldn’t be where I am now without that support.

It’s such an important space for young people and creatives, and I really hope it can be open and available forever.

What are you working on next, and is there anything you’re excited for people to hear?

I’m very excited for what’s happening next. I’m currently in the middle of creating and bringing together my debut EP, which will be out in 2027. Next year is really going to be the year for new music from me, and it’s all in motion as we speak.

I’m so excited to finally share the music, the visuals and the stories behind each song on the project. I’m also really looking forward to doing more shows and bringing this new music to life in a live setting.

There’s so much I can’t wait for people to hear and see, and I’m really excited to take everyone on that journey with me.
