Live Review: Sweet Beans Deliver An Electric Set At Their Headline District Gig
On a sunny bank holiday weekend, a seemingly endless stretch of days off ahead of you, there is nothing better than heading to a gig, especially one that promises an evening of high energy, dance inducing music. Locals Sweet Beans, everyone’s favourite genre-bending, riot-jazz infused band headlined the ‘OUT OF THIS WORLD’ event at District in Liverpool. Supported by local bands Tavananna and Small Man Big Car, the whole evening was a true celebration of sound.
Consisting of Adam Letman on Saxophone, Josh Blackwell on Guitar, Miceál Sammon on Bass and Trombone and Henry Atkinson on Drums, Sweet Beans exploded onto the local scene back in 2018 when the band formed during their time at Liverpool Hope University. Ever since then their musical prowess has grown and they have only gotten bigger and better.
Having gigged consistently across Merseyside and the rest of the UK, the band returned for this special headline gig. Never wanting to pigeon hole themselves into one genre, Sweet Beans create an infectious fusion of sounds in their music by blending the individual influences of each band member into their own original tracks.
Taking to the stage in a packed out room, Sweet Beans immediately had the audience in the palm of their hands, the anticipation in the air was palpable. The band delivered a raucous set, opening with tracks Beagussy and Stabs and it wasn’t long before the audience were dancing along. Sweet Beans have this ability to completely overwhelm their audiences in the very best way.
Their music seeps into your soul and before you know it you are overcome by the whole experience. The remainder of the set was filled with a mixture of newer tracks and some fan favourites from their previous EPs such as Illuminate, Wasps and Nosedive – all of which had the audience stomping their feet.
Sweet Beans are definitely one of the best live bands on the local scene. The gig was an adrenaline fuelled, intoxicating haze and solidifies Sweet Beans’ standing as one of the most exciting bands around.
