Live Review: Red Rum Club At Aintree Racecourse

From the second Red Rum Club stepped foot on the stage, the tired, tipsy and sunburned Aintree race goers and die fans waiting at the barrier forgot all of their failed bets and blistering necks and were completely enthralled for the next hour and a half.

The six-piece band of salt-of-the-earth Scousers delivered an electric set that proved why they’re one of the best live acts around right now. From the first strum of opening track American Nights & English Mornings, arms shot into the air, and the atmosphere ignited. The studio version already lifts your mood—but live, it’s on another level.

The crowd was full of people of all ages—children danced, teenagers danced, and even the older folks joined in, keeping up with the younger ones just like they did in their youth.

Midway through the set, the energy softened. The band dipped into more heartfelt territory, creating a powerful moment of connection. Thousands embraced, phone torches lit up the night sky, and for a few minutes, the racecourse felt like the most intimate venue in the world.

But Red Rum Club didn’t let things stay mellow for long. With frontman Fran Doran leading the charge, the band snapped the audience back into a frenzy, driven by infectious rhythms and thunderous percussion.

The main set closed with Would You Rather Be Lonely—a song that’s practically a Liverpool anthem now. Kids were lifted onto shoulders, families sang in unison, and friends threw arms around each other. It was pure magic.

As the band left the stage, the applause was deafening. We all knew there’d be an encore, but that didn’t stop the crowd screaming like it was the first song all over again.

When they returned, they blew the roof off. The roars from the crowd and the pounding bass surely echoed across Aintree.

Friday night was a celebration—not just of music, but of Liverpool itself. Red Rum Club stood tall in front of their hometown, doing what they do best. And if this show is anything to go by, whatever comes next for the lads will be even bigger, louder, and more brilliant than ever.
