Last Night A DJ Saved My Life: Bill Brewster & Frank Broughton Bring Iconic Dance Music Book to Liverpool
Liverpool’s dance music lovers are in for a treat as legendary authors Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton bring their acclaimed book Last Night A DJ Saved My Life to Rough Trade Liverpool for a special night of conversation and music. The event, presented by Liverpool-based design studio Dorothy in collaboration with Rough Trade, takes place on Saturday 22 February, combining a book signing, an in-depth Q&A, and a live DJ set from the duo.
Since its first publication in 1999, Last Night A DJ Saved My Life has been hailed as the definitive history of the disc jockey, tracing the evolution of DJ culture from its underground roots to global phenomenon. The latest edition features brand-new chapters and a foreword by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, making it an essential read for anyone passionate about club culture.
The evening kicks off at 6pm, with Brewster and Broughton sitting down for an in-conversation session at 7pm, hosted by music journalist Jim Ottewill (Out of Space: How UK Cities Shaped Rave Culture). Expect deep dives into the history of dance music, personal anecdotes, and insights into how DJing has shaped nightlife and music scenes around the world.
Following the discussion, the duo take to the decks from 8pm to 11pm, treating guests to a three-hour DJ set that promises to celebrate the sounds and stories woven throughout their book.
This event is part of Dorothy’s current exhibition, The Graphic Art of Disco, which explores the visual culture surrounding dance music through bold and innovative design.
A must-attend for dance music aficionados, DJs, and club culture enthusiasts, this immersive evening is set to celebrate the past, present, and future of dance music with two of its most esteemed historians at the helm.
