In Bloom: Dancer Brings Mesmerising Solo Show To Shakespeare North Playhouse

Connoisseurs of avant-garde dance and music are in for a treat next week. Celebrated Swiss-born Aline Costa, a performer and choreographer, presents her latest work In Bloom at Shakespeare North Playhouse.

Following on from her past visceral work, such as Streets Of Apples and Woman Without, In Bloom features evocative imagery, compelling narratives, and dark humour, all of which transports the audience into an imaginatively bizarre world.

In Bloom also features original music by Liverpool avant-garde quartet Ex-Easter Island Head, known for their unique compositions for prepared electric guitar and percussion. Their sixth and latest album, Norther, was released in May 2024, to positive critical acclaim.

Costa, a performer and choreographer born in Switzerland, trained in Mexico at Univerdanza Dance Company, and has been based in Huyton and Liverpool since 2016. Since moving to Liverpool, her career has seen her produce, choreograph and perform across the North West, as well as working on a variety of short films.

Most recently, she was offered a Physical Fest Female Bursaries to create a new solo piece and presented it at the festival last summer at the Unity Theatre in Liverpool to great acclaim.

Speaking during rehearsals for the show, Costa said: “The audience can expect something deliciously unpredictable; a surreal world inhibited by a strange character that keeps everyone, including me, on their toes – I absolutely love that feeling!

She continued: “As the show begins, the audience will meet a mysterious, ethereal figure taking the stage; slowly captivating them as she weaves her way through the random threads of her mind, all the while maintaining a capricious dark sense of humour.
