Review: Tim Lucas We’re Havin’ a Party at St Helens Theatre Royal
Tim Lucas’s We’re Havin’ a Party arrived at St Helens Theatre Royal with no airs or theatrical grandstanding, and that’s precisely its charm.
This is a show that understands its audience from the outset, trading high-concept ambition for warmth, accessibility and a genuine sense of shared experience. Blending stand-up comedy, personal storytelling and live music, Lucas crafts an evening that feels less like a staged production and more like an open invitation to a lively, well-hosted gathering. Put simply: it’s less a show you watch and more a party you’re part of.
Lucas is at his most compelling when he leans into his uncanny natural rapport with the audience. His delivery is loose but assured, shifting seamlessly between dry, well-timed one-liners and longer, anecdotal routines rooted in family life, local culture and the peculiarities of life on the road. There’s a clear sense of authenticity in his material—nothing feels forced or overly polished, which works in the show’s favour.
His ability to read the room is one of his strongest assets. He adjusts pacing and tone instinctively. The humour rarely strays into edgier territory; instead, it thrives on relatability and observation, drawing laughs from recognisable, everyday moments.
Vocally, Lucas is confident without being overpowering. When transitioning into musical numbers, he avoids the trap of over performing, maintaining the same relaxed, personable energy that defines his comedy.
The live band is central to the production’s success, acting as both a musical backbone and an energy driver. The arrangements—rooted in Rock n Roll, Motown and classic pop—are tight, polished and clearly delivered by experienced musicians who understand the rhythm of live entertainment. There’s a pleasing versatility in their performance, shifting effortlessly between upbeat, danceable numbers and more subdued, reflective pieces. Add to this backing singers and dancers and you end up with a wonderful show.
The set list leans into familiarity, encouraging audience participation and sing alongs, but avoids predictability thanks to subtle reinterpretations and dynamic pacing.
Surprise of the night was the guest appearance of theatre manager and ‘birthday girl’ Chantelle Joseph who joined Tim on stage for a particularly emotional duet.
Well known as the home of Panto the intimate setting of St Helens Theatre Royal proves ideal for this kind of show. The proximity between performer and audience enhances the sense of inclusivity, making even larger crowd moments feel personal. Audience interaction is encouraged but never forced, emerging naturally through banter and shared musical moments.
The audience mix—from longtime fans to first-timers—adds to the sense of communal enjoyment, reinforcing the idea that this is entertainment designed to be shared.
The pacing is tight and well judged, balancing comedy and music so the evening never loses momentum. All this is underpinned with a West End standard stage design, lighting and sound.
We’re Havin’ a Party delivers exactly what it promises: a relaxed, cheerful and thoroughly enjoyable night out. It may not aim to reinvent the theatrical wheel, but it succeeds where it matters—connection, energy and entertainment.
It’s the kind of night that reminds you why live performance matters: shared laughter, familiar songs, and the simple joy of being in the room where something fun is happening.
