Five Things Every Guest Room Needs

Do you finally have a spare room in your home? Or have you opted to buy or rent a home that comes with one?

If you’re someone who loves having friends and family to visit, it can be a fun endeavour to set up this space as a guest room. Although, it can be daunting to know exactly what you need to put in to make sure that everyone’s comfortable. So, here are some ideas!

1. A Comfy Bed and Bedding

Many people opt to have a single or small double bed in their guest room, but the main thing to consider is the comfort of the pillows and the mattress, as well as the breathability of the bedding. If you have a guest who’s having a longer stay in your home, you’ll need to offer them additional bedding, and it can be worth looking for a bed for the room based more on the size of the space, which can include a small single bed that you can buy from endurancebeds.co.uk.

2. Toiletries

Even if your guest room doesn’t have an ensuite bathroom, you may still want to supply your guest with some toiletries. The choice of toiletries that you offer will vary based on your budget and the relationship you have with the guests. Some people even give their friends joke toiletries when they stay in their home!

However, it’s worth investing in some soap, a flannel, a mini toothbrush, some toothpaste, and some deodorant. This can be put on the bedside table, and if your guest has arrived suddenly and without much preparation, they’ll likely appreciate it. Don’t forget to include basin taps in your guest room essentials. They are a small detail that can make a big difference in the comfort of your guests.

3. Storage Space

Of course, you’ll need to ensure that your guests have somewhere to store their clothes, their books, and their shoes, even if they’re only staying overnight.

The storage space that you can offer will vary based on the size of the room and your budget. For medium-sized rooms, this will usually involve a chest of drawers and a small wardrobe as well as a bedside table. If you have more room, it can also be worth incorporating an ottoman at the end of the bed. In fact, an ottoman is a great place to put those toiletries and extra bedding that your friend or family member may need!

4. Blackout Curtains

Many people have been to a hotel or have stayed in a friend’s house overnight, only to find that the curtains or the blinds don’t block out the light sufficiently. This can make it very hard to have a lie-in when you’re staying at a friend’s house on holiday in the summer months! So, it can be worth investing in either blackout blinds or curtains for your guest room.

These will also act as heat repellents as blackout blinds and curtains are designed to be anti-UV, meaning that on hot days, they’ll keep the heat out, too!

5. Heating (or cooling!)

Depending on the time of year when you have your guests coming to stay in your guest room, you’ll want to assess the temperature. For many people, the temperature of their guest room is linked to the rest of the house’s heating. So, in the winter months, all your guests will usually need to do is turn on the radiator. If the guest room doesn’t have sufficient heating, then you may want to supply a standing heater to help keep the room cosy, as well as supply them with an electric blanket, if you can.

In the summer, you can place a fan, an air cooler, or, if you have the money, a temporary portable air conditioner.
