Shut Up! And Listen To Esme Bridie’s New Single
Liverpool’s own Esme Bridie is releasing the second track Shut Up! for her upcoming EP Something In Your Teeth, bringing more talent to the City’s vibrant music scene. This new single follows her previous release, Mad About It (2022) and is a captivating, feminist track with a real hypnotic quality.
Following prior support from BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio, Jazz Fm, Bido Lito, Get Into This and RGM, the esteemed indie singer-songwriter is continuing her musical journey, moving onwards and upwards, creating a unique and dynamic collection. Her work is imbued with passion and soul, making her tracks so easy to listen to.
Bridie describes the song as, “the cathartic inner dialogue that goes on in my head as I listen to unsolicited opinions.” She comments that her inclination to write this song stemmed from how people speak to her in comparison to her male peers, something that many women can relate to.
She further states, “people often see me as a quiet, shy person and although, I can be that, there is also another side to me that I’ve been taught to keep in. I’m an angry girl. This song is me letting this out!”
Lyrically, Shut Up! encapsulates the universal experience of women being told to reduce themselves, take up less space, and be typified by preconceived gender ideals. Bridie’s songwriting is deeply personal yet so relatable and compelling. Her poignant and imperative voice commands its listeners to shut up and listen.
Her vocals on this track are multi-layered, giving the song a beautiful and haunting quality, akin to artists such as Lily Allen, Clairo and Phoebe Bridgers. These vocals are paired seamlessly with the lulling, bluesy feel of the melody. Shut Up! is characterised by clever syncopation, rich bass and subtle crescendos – it truly is wonderful to listen to. Moreover, it exhibits a stunning guitar solo that underpins Bridie’s comprehensive musical talent. If you’re a fan of Alice Phoebe Lou, Julia Jacklin or Stella Donnelly, you’ll also love the punchy music and raw lyrics of this rising female artist.
From what we’ve heard, Esme Bridie’s EP is off to an amazing start and there is no doubt that the bones of her creative vision will come together and create a great collection of music. We are so excited to hear what’s coming up next from the Mersey’s enthralling singer-songwriter and recommend checking out Esme’s socials to keep up to date with all her latest content.
