Drop The Dead Donkey Brings the Newsroom to Playhouse

The original cast and writers of the BAFTA and Emmy award-winning TV comedy reunite for a brand-new stage adaptation of Drop The Dead Donkey: The Reawakening! It’s coming to Liverpool Playhouse from Tuesday 14 May to Saturday 18 May. This time, the Globelink News team is not only back but also taking the stage live for the very first time.

Bursting with razor-sharp wit and classic British humour, this brand-new production reimagines the iconic TV comedy Drop The Dead Donkey, sure to leave audiences in stitches. Features the original cast members Stephen Tompkinson (British Comedy Award winner for Best TV Comedy Actor for Drop the Dead Donkey) as Damien, while Neil Pearson (film Bridget Jones’s Diary and Hand to God, West End) as Dave, and Susannah Doyle (The Secondary Victim, Park Theatre; Hurly Burly, Old Vic/West End) as Joy.

Gus is played by Robert Duncan (Where the Heart Is and The Bill, ITV) and Ingrid Lacey (Desdemona, Park Theatre; The Astronauts Chair, Drum Theatre Plymouth) portrays Helen, alongside Jeff Rawle (film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire; Saint George and the Dragon, National Theatre) as George, and Victoria Wicks (Twelfth Night, RSC; The Country Wife, Bristol Old Vic) as Sally Smedley. Along with Julia Hills as Mairead; Kerena Jagpal as Rita and understudies Claire Louise Amias, Adam Morris and Riya Rajeev.

Directed by Derek Bond, whose Dinosaur World Live for Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has been nominated for Best family Show at the 2024 Olivier Awards. This hot off the press production is written by the same award-winning writing team as the original hit sitcom Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin (Outnumbered), who said: “We’re overjoyed to be working again with the original cast of Drop The Dead Donkey, after a brief hiatus of about 30 years. It’s going to be hugely enjoyable to watch those seven funny, flawed characters from Globelink News being plunged into the cutthroat world of modern 24-hour news gathering and trying to navigate their way through the daily chaos of social media, fake news, and interim Prime Ministers.”

Drop The Dead Donkey: The Reawakening! exposes the underside of the broadcasting industry in all its riotous glory. Don’t miss out on this British comedy, a favourite of millions, at the Liverpool Playhouse.
