Spectacular ‘Borealis’ Installation To Illuminate Royal Albert Dock This Spring

Liverpool’s iconic Royal Albert Dock is set to host a breathtaking spectacle this March as the world-renowned art installation Borealis arrives in the city for the first time.

Running from 20 – 30 March 2025, the immersive experience will transform the dock’s historic Hartley Quay into a mesmerizing recreation of the Northern Lights, offering a free must-see attraction for visitors.

Created by acclaimed Swiss artist Dan Acher, Borealis blends technology and natural elements, using beams of light to travel through cloud particles, creating the illusion of the aurora borealis. With nature playing a role in shaping the display—through variations in wind, humidity, and temperature—each viewing experience is unique yet equally captivating.

Having enchanted audiences in over 40 cities worldwide, including Paris, Tokyo, and Melbourne, Borealis has even earned a permanent home at Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay Supertrees. Now, Liverpool will have the chance to witness its magic, with the dock’s striking waterfront serving as the perfect backdrop.

The evening-only installation will be further enhanced by an atmospheric soundtrack by French composer Guillaume Desbois, creating a sensory-rich experience that invites visitors to pause, look up, and lose themselves in the wonder of the lights.

For those traveling to the city, Holiday Inn Express and Premier Inn at the dock offer ideal stays, ensuring visitors can make the most of their trip. There’s amazing restaurants and bars at the Albert Dock to make the perfect day and evening out.

Whether you’re planning a romantic night out or a family-friendly adventure, Borealis promises an unforgettable encounter with one of nature’s most magical phenomena—right in the heart of Liverpool.
