‘Can Cook’ Helps Merseyside Tackle Food Poverty With ‘Share Your Lunch’ Campaign

The Can Cook ‘Share your lunch’ Campaign has been in full force over the summer – Can Cook an anti-poverty agency, is providing a unique opportunity for everyone in Liverpool to contribute to providing a fresh and healthy meal for someone living in food poverty.

The Can Cook street food truck has been visiting festivals and venues across Liverpool this summer and sold a whopping ‘2500 meals’. Can Cook have had fantastic support from CBRE, Santander, Brabners, Agent Marketing, Africa Oye and Mersey Shopping Park – some providing their own staff teams to come and battle it out apprentice style to staff the truck and sell as many meals as possible.

This is the first run of Share your lunch in Liverpool – it’s a simple way to get 1000’s of people across Liverpool involved in providing fresh meals for people in food poverty.

Robbie Davison, Director of Can Cook said:

It is shocking that in Liverpool alone, 60,000 people are living in food poverty – this includes 33% of children in Liverpool. Numbers are climbing and action needs to be taken!”

Through our Share you lunch campaign we want to make it possible to keep feeding fresh food to thousands of people food poverty”

This is how Share your lunch works – for every meal that’s been sold Can Cook will provide a fresh, healthy meal free of charge to a family in food poverty! From 3rdAugust for two weeks in August Can Cook are working with a great range of organisations to provide healthier fresh meals to people of all ages. They have a great menu cooked up from our family favourites including Cottage Pie, Scouse and Lasagne with some equally tasty vegetarian options.

Can Cook will be working with The Whitechapel Centre, Imagine If Trust and food banks, Bridge Chapel Food Bank, the REST Centre, Croxteth GEMS, Speke Venny, Five Children and Families Trust, and Epsom Street Volunteer and Community Centre (part of Nugent Care) to provide fresh food for people who need it.

James Sloan, Development Manager for ‘Imagine If Trust’, running Central Liverpool Food Bank said:

“Imagine If Trust are pleased to be working with Can Cook to try and reduce food poverty in our city. It has become increasingly vital – in the last 4 years Central Liverpool Foodbank has given out emergency food parcels to over 25,000 across our 4 centres and are currently feeding around 1,000 people per month. The majority of our food is non-perishable to increase it’s shelf life due to the numbers we feed and where possible we try to incorporate fresh fruit and veg.

Working with Can Cook on the ‘Share your Lunch’ campaign will enable us to get fresh, healthy meals to those attending the Foodbank. We’d like to thank all the companies who gave their time and of course all the generous people who bought their lunch from the Can Cook truck.”

Ruth MCCaughley, Fundraising Manager for The Whitechapel Centre said:

“The Whitechapel Centre are delighted to be receiving freshly cooked, healthy meals from Can Cook over the next few weeks. For our clients, many of whom are rough sleeping or street drinking, having a good meal is an opportunity to take time out, talk to each other and our support workers.

It is wonderful to see that the public have supported the Can Cook “Share your Lunch” campaign and these meals are now being passed on to some of the most vulnerable and isolated people in our community.”

The Can Cook Kitchen BBQ will be in the City Centre later this year – so look out for them and come and buy a meal to support people in Liverpool in food poverty.
