Just moments from Sefton Park on Greenbank Lane, The Wheelbarrow has become a go-to destination for everything from breakfast in the sunshine and leisurely lunches to afternoon tea and private celebrations.
Formerly known primarily as a neighbourhood café, The Wheelbarrow has evolved into a versatile all-day venue, with food, artisan baking and a large enclosed garden terrace all under one roof.
A hidden garden terrace near Sefton Park
One of The Wheelbarrow’s biggest draws during the summer months is its south-facing outdoor terrace.
Tucked away from the bustle of the city centre, the garden offers a relaxed setting for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea while making the most of the warmer weather.
Its location also makes it an easy addition to a day around Sefton Park, whether you’re meeting friends for brunch or looking for somewhere to stop for lunch.
The venue has free parking too, making it particularly handy for those travelling from elsewhere in Liverpool.
Breakfast, brunch and lunch
The Wheelbarrow serves food throughout the day, with a menu that mixes familiar favourites with dishes inspired by flavours from further afield.
Breakfast options include Full English and Vegetarian Breakfasts alongside Middle Eastern-inspired Shakshuka, Very Berry Waffles and a selection of lighter seasonal dishes.
Many of the breads and baked goods are made fresh by Frankley’s Bakery, the artisan bakery connected to The Wheelbarrow.
At lunchtime, diners can choose from dishes including the signature Posh Fish Finger Sandwich served on toasted brioche, Mediterranean Wraps, Croque Monsieur, Chicken Caesar Salad and traditional Fish & Chips, alongside changing seasonal options.
Fresh bakes from Frankley’s Bakery
Frankley’s Bakery has become another major part of The Wheelbarrow experience, producing handcrafted breads, pastries and cakes each day.
As well as supplying The Wheelbarrow, the bakery provides baked goods for its sister venue, The Watering Can, and operates a mobile bakery trailer around Sefton Park.
That means visitors can expect freshly baked breads to feature throughout the café menu, alongside cakes and sweet treats for anyone stopping by for coffee.
Afternoon tea in the garden
For something a little more indulgent, The Wheelbarrow also offers its own Afternoon Tea.
It features handcrafted finger sandwiches, homemade scones served with Champagne strawberry jam and clotted cream, freshly baked treats from Frankley’s Bakery and a choice of speciality tea or coffee.
During the warmer months, guests can enjoy afternoon tea outside on the garden terrace, making it an appealing option for birthdays, catch-ups and other celebrations.
A South Liverpool venue for private events
The Wheelbarrow is increasingly being used for more than casual dining.
With space for around 90 guests indoors and capacity for up to 125 for private events, the Greenbank Lane venue can host everything from baby showers, birthdays and christenings to networking events, workshops and family celebrations.
A dedicated events menu is also available for private and corporate bookings.
