Water Lantern Festival Lights Up Birkenhead Park This June

A mesmerising celebration inspired by Thailand’s iconic lantern traditions is set to illuminate the Liverpool City Region this summer, as the Water Lantern Festival arrives at Birkenhead Park on 6 June.

Following a successful UK debut last year, the festival will transform the park’s lake into a glowing spectacle of floating lights, offering a unique cultural experience rooted in reflection, connection and community.

A global tradition arrives on Merseyside

Inspired by the world-famous lantern festivals of Chiang Mai, the event invites visitors to take part in a symbolic ritual centred on mindfulness and shared experience. As dusk falls, hundreds of eco-friendly lanterns will be set afloat, each carrying personal messages of hope, gratitude or remembrance.

Guests can purchase a lantern kit via Fever, which includes everything needed to take part in the ritual, alongside conversation cards designed to encourage meaningful connection.

Music, food and a reflective atmosphere

Beyond the lantern release, the evening promises a relaxed, open-air setting with live music and a curated selection of food from local vendors. The event is designed to be accessible for all ages, blending cultural storytelling with a laid-back festival atmosphere.

Ben Taylor, Regional Manager at Fever, said: “We’re very excited to bring the Water Lantern Festival to Liverpool for the first time after such a successful debut last year. At Fever, our mission is to democratise access to culture and entertainment in real life, and this experience is a great example of how global traditions can be enjoyed locally.”

Event Director Seth Hewett added: “At its core, the Water Lantern Festival is about connection, both with yourself and with others. We’ve seen how powerful it can be to create space for reflection, and we’re excited to bring that experience to Liverpool in such a beautiful setting.”
