Review: Under The Mersey Moon at Floral Pavilion
Under the Mersey Moon is more than just a musical; it’s a celebration of Liverpool’s unique cultural heartbeat, wrapped in the warm embrace of country music’s storytelling tradition. The production’s return to the Floral Pavilion this Valentine’s weekend feels like a homecoming, not just for the cast and crew, but for the audience who find themselves swept up in its infectious charm.
The play follows the story of Danny an aspiring country singer trapped in a dead end job, a failing relationship and parents who tell him to get a ‘proper job’. Danny lives in Liverpool with his grandad and finds inspiration from the fact that his grandad was a country singer in a 60’s group who recorded a country album but never really found success. Determined to be successful Danny goes to Nashville only to find that it’s not what he really expected.
Sam Heller’s portrayal of Danny Rogers is a master class in balancing vulnerability with resilience. His voice carries the emotional weight of the story, from tender ballads that linger long after the final note to upbeat numbers that have the audience tapping their feet.
Heller’s nuanced performance makes Danny’s journey from Liverpool to Nashville resonate on a deeply personal level, inviting the audience to reflect on themes of ambition, love, and belonging. He is supported by a talented and dedicated cast including Samantha Alton as Louise, Christopher Lee Power as the enigmatic Kenny, Young Harry as played by Adam Johnson who shows his versatility as the lead guitarist in the house band. Liverpool based Leslie Longley appears as Mike whilst Ellie is played by singer songwriter Sarah Lou Fletcher.
The inclusion of local icon Billy Butler as Danny’s grand dad adds a layer of authenticity and warmth .Danny’s relationship with his grand dad is truly emotional. Butler’s effortless humour and natural charisma light up the stage, creating moments of genuine connection that feel like a shared secret between performer and audience. Lesley Butler’s steady and heartfelt performance complements this dynamic, grounding the production in a familial warmth that enhances its emotional impact.
The ensemble cast deserves special mention for their tight harmonies and spirited performances. Their chemistry is palpable, creating a sense of camaraderie that translates into every scene and song. The supporting cast’s ability to balance wit and warmth adds depth to the narrative, making the story feel lived-in and authentic.
The original score by Jimmy Rae and Pete Davies is a standout feature, blending the twang of country with the soul of Liverpool. The live band delivers a rich, dynamic sound that elevates the storytelling, with arrangements that highlight the lyrics’ emotional core. Whether it’s a raucous, foot-stomping number or a quiet, reflective ballad, the music commands attention and stirs the heart.
The production’s design choices are understated but purposeful. Lighting and sound are expertly crafted to keep the music front and centre, while subtle scenic elements evoke the contrasting worlds of Liverpool’s urban streets and Nashville’s neon-lit nightlife. This balance creates an inviting atmosphere that feels both intimate and expansive, drawing the audience into the story’s emotional landscape.
Under the Mersey Moon embodies the spirit of Liverpool’s vibrant arts scene—rooted in community, rich in storytelling, and alive with music that speaks to the soul. It’s a production that resonates beyond the stage, inviting audiences to experience a shared sense of pride and joy. For Liverpool Noise readers, this show offers a perfect blend of local flavour and universal appeal, making it a must-see for anyone who cherishes the power of live theatre.
By the time the final scene unfolds on the Mersey water front we realize that country music is only the setting for this show and it’s really about hopes, aspirations and the realization that maybe everything we are looking for is right under our nose.
Whether you’re a lifelong fan of musical theatre or new to the genre, Under the Mersey Moon promises an evening of heartfelt performances, memorable songs, and a celebration of everything that makes Liverpool’s cultural scene so special. It’s a show that stays with you long after the curtain falls, a true testament to the magic that happens when local talent and authentic storytelling come together under the Mersey moon.
