We Buy White Albums At FACT

Preceding International Beatle Week beginning August 20th, Rutherford Chang has brought his exhibition We Buy White Albums to FACT. His collection consists of 1,000 original copies of The Beatles highly sought after White Album; each LP has its own serial number making each one unique. This ‘uniqueness’ was the main draw for Chang when he first put out his advert to any White Album owners or sellers 8 years ago.

Chang saw the famous cover as a blank canvas for owners and when flicking through the many vinyl’s on display you come across stained copies, personalised copies and copies with notes and lyrics written across. Some still have the original poster and some are barely in any condition to be played, I even came across copy where the owner had printed out and laminated a calendar to then colour code the sides which she had listened to on specific dates… I know. Rutherford Chang has designed his own cover combining all the personalised covers available to buy from Bold Street Coffee.

The launch offered attendees free white cocktails and live music from Ali Ingle, Sophia Ben-Yousef, Natalie McCool and Joe Maddocks who all offered their own interpretation of a White Album track along with original songs. However for the duration of the exhibition we will be treated to White Album on repeat unless, of course, you wish to listen to one particular song then you are invited to choose a copy of your choice to listen to.

We Buy White Albums will be on at the space next door to FACT until September 15th and we are invited to contribute to the collection our own original copies if you are lucky enough to own one. Rutherford Chang is presenting an artist’s talk from 6pm on August 28th to discuss his vinyl collection with Mike Stubbs and much similar to the launch, FACT collaborate with LIMF to present another night of live music in the venue on September 4th. I implore avid vinyl collectors and Beatles enthusiasts alike to indulge in this one-off, no matter how jealous it makes you and your ’73 repressing.
