13 Piece Chilean Afrobeat Orchestra, Newen Afrobeat, To Perform In Liverpool This August

A 13-piece Chilean orchestra that makes music inspired by the legacy of the Nigerian musician Fela Kuti returns to Liverpool this August.

Described as ‘a magnificent new sample of cultural integration between Latin America and Africa’, Newen Afrobeat unify African rhythms with a colourful and energetic staging, embedded in a deep social message that talks about their roots and social movements.

With a ten-year career, four albums and nine international tours under their belt, the band have performed on important stages such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, WOMEX, Felabration Lagos, and even at Liverpool’s own Africa Oyé, becoming one of the most played Afrobeat acts in the world and a recognised exponent of the world music scene.

After releasing their “Newen Plays Fela” EP (which includes the single ‘Opposite People’ – Afrobeat’s most watched video worldwide), the group released a second volume of songs by Fela Kuti featuring a new collaboration with his son Seun Kuti.

Currently, Newen Afrobeat is finishing production on their new original album, which features collaborations with renowned artists such as Dele Sosimi, Joe Vasconcellos, among others. The album is scheduled for release in August 2023.
