The 3 Greatest French Players To Play For Liverpool
Over the years, we have seen some fantastic players grace the pitch at Anfield. However, it may be a surprise to learn that not many French players have played for Liverpool, especially when you consider some of the most influential French players that have played in the Premier League.
Out of the small number of French players that have played for Liverpool, a few have failed to live up to the hype, such as Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Anthony Le Tallec.
However, there have been some French players who have made a lasting impression on the red side of Liverpool. And, considering France is currently the second favorite for this year’s FIFA Football World Cup, we thought we would take a look at three of the greatest French players to play for Liverpool:
1. Djibril Cisse
There is only one place to begin, and this is with Djibril Cisse, who is arguably the most influential French player to have ever worn a Liverpool shirt. Although he only played for the club for two years, the fiery Frenchman played a major role in Liverpool’s footballing history.
We are sure you don’t need reminding, but just in case you do, Cisse converted a vital penalty during the team’s Champion’s League victory in Istanbul in 2005. It is not the only important goal he has scored. He scored the opener in the Red’s infamous victory over West Ham in the FA Cup, as well as netting two goals during Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Super Cup.
2. Mamadou Sakho
It is crazy to think that Sakho started his pro footballing career as a striker, considering he is now known for his unorthodox and unconventional playing style.
He was once PSG’s youngest-ever captain, at just 17 years old, a clear sign that he was one of football’s brightest prospects.
His career at the Reds was not plain-sailing, though, with a number of injuries and Sakho eventually leaving the club after a string of disciplinary problems.
Despite this, he built a cult status of his own for his brave performances and special relationship with the fans. His affable personality and unique defending style mean he won’t be forgotten by the Kop anytime soon!
3. Nicholas Anelka
Last but not least, we cannot talk about great French players without mentioning one of the finest forwards in football at the time, Nicholas Anelka.
Anelka has played at the likes of Juventus, Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and PSG.
We are under no illusion that Anelka’s best spell did not come at Liverpool. While on loan here, he scored four league goals in 20 appearances. While a lot of fans wanted him to stay, Houllier decided to sign El Hadji Diouf instead. And, we all know how that went.
Other French players of note
As mentioned, not many French players have played for Liverpool. However, some other players of note include David N’Gog, Djimi Traore, Bruno Cheyrou, and Aly Cissokho.
