Liverpool Cathedral Announces World Premiere of Noël Light and Sound Experience

Liverpool Cathedral will be transformed into a spectacular city of stars this Christmas when the world premiere of Noël arrives from 27 November to 5 December.

Created by the internationally acclaimed artistic team Luxmuralis, the immersive light and sound experience will combine breathtaking projections, music and storytelling to take visitors on a journey through festive memories and the Nativity story.

The new production marks the return of Liverpool Cathedral’s popular Christmas light and sound tradition, which has attracted sold-out audiences in previous years.

Throughout the experience, the Cathedral’s monumental arches, ceilings and stonework will become a vast living canvas, with different parts of the building used to explore the sights, sounds and emotions of the festive season.

In the Well, nostalgic Christmas scenes will be accompanied by reworkings of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, evoking memories of Christmases past. Visitors will then enter the Nave, where large-scale projections will bring the Nativity story to life alongside a new interpretation of The First Noël.

At the heart of the production will be Constellation, a new installation featuring thousands of stars created by schoolchildren from across the Liverpool City Region.

Each star will carry a personal message of hope or reflection. Together, they will form a galaxy of young voices inside the Cathedral, inviting visitors to consider their own hopes for Christmas and the year ahead.

“Through light, music, storytelling and thousands of stars created by children from across our region, visitors will be invited to pause, reflect and experience the Cathedral in a profoundly moving way. We look forward to welcoming people of all ages and backgrounds to share in this unforgettable celebration.”

Luxmuralis has previously brought a number of large-scale installations to Liverpool Cathedral, helping to establish the venue’s annual light and sound experience as a festive tradition for families across the city.

Peter Walker, sculptor and creative director of Luxmuralis, said: “We are delighted to return to Liverpool Cathedral and to premiere Noël within one of the world’s most remarkable buildings.

“However, it’s far more than that. It is about the tradition that our partnership with the Cathedral has created for many families around the city and creating something truly unique and magical for Liverpool.

“That uniqueness comes from the way we create these installations, in what is one of the largest indoor immersive creative experiences in the world.”

Visitors will also be able to continue their Christmas experience at the Cathedral’s Welsford Bistro, which will serve a special festive menu inspired by the warmth and traditional flavours of Christmas markets.

Noël runs at Liverpool Cathedral from 27 November to 5 December. Advance booking is recommended, particularly for the most popular dates and times.
