Liverpool locals will have the chance to pocket £125 next week as a crew of runaway grannies takes to the city’s streets on souped-up mobility scooters.
As part of IRN-BRU’s 125th anniversary celebrations, its Granny Tourismo challenge is coming to Liverpool on Thursday 17 September, with getaway grannies appearing at three secret locations across the city.
The challenge is simple: find a gran before she makes her escape and you could walk away £125 richer.
At each of the three Liverpool locations, the first four people to successfully track down the IRN-BRU granny will each win £125.
How To Take Part In IRN-BRU’s Liverpool Challenge
The locations won’t be revealed in advance. Instead, cryptic clues will be shared across IRN-BRU’s social media channels throughout the day, pointing people towards where the getaway grannies can be found.
Once a clue drops, Liverpool’s would-be granny hunters will need to move quickly. The pensioners should at least be fairly easy to spot: they’ll be tearing around on mobility scooters decked out with blue flame racing stripes as they attempt to make their getaway.
The Liverpool event is part of a four-city UK tour celebrating 125 years of IRN-BRU, with Glasgow, Edinburgh and London also joining in the hunt.
Amanda Barrie Leads The Getaway Grannies
Coronation Street and Carry On legend Amanda Barrie is fronting the UK-wide ‘Catch Me If You Gran’ campaign.
The 90-year-old actress, perhaps best known for playing Alma Baldwin in Coronation Street and Cleo in Carry On Cleo, says she knows a thing or two about causing chaos herself.
“After all those years in the UK’s top soap and my Carry On capers, I know a thing or two about causing chaos,” Amanda said.
“Then there was my time wreaking havoc in Larkhill Prison, not to mention taking a swipe at Gordon Ramsay on national TV. But even I struggle to keep up with these BRU grannies.
“They’ve traded shopping trolleys for mobility scooters and they’re determined not to be caught. If you do manage to stop one, you’ve definitely earned your £125.”
An Iconic IRN-BRU Granny Returns
The stunt brings to life one of IRN-BRU’s best-known advertising characters more than two decades after she first appeared on TV screens.
The brand’s famous 2001 ‘Electric Lady’ advert featured a seemingly sweet elderly woman cruising through town on a mobility scooter, smiling and waving to neighbours before raiding a shop for dozens of cans of IRN-BRU. Now, the granny is back – and this time Liverpool gets to join in the chaos.
Kenny Nicholson, Director of Brand at IRN-BRU, said: “To celebrate our anniversary, we’ve brought to life one of our greatest characters.
“The IRN-BRU grannies are out in force next week, revving their scooters and ready to hit the road. Fans will need to be quick as they won’t be in each of the four cities for long before they make a speedy getaway to the next one.
“This is one of the many ways we’re giving back to the nation as we mark 125 years of Made in Scotland from Girders.”
The Granny Tourismo challenge begins in Glasgow on Tuesday 15 September, followed by Edinburgh on Wednesday 16 September.
The grannies then arrive in Liverpool on Thursday 17 September, before making their final getaway in London on Friday 18 September.
So, if you spot a granny speeding through Liverpool on a flame-covered mobility scooter next Thursday, it might be worth giving chase – there could be £125 in it for you.
