Christmas Story Trail Returns to Calderstones Park for 2025 with Festive Adventure Inspired by Jarvis’ Mr Santa

Families can step into a world of festive magic this winter as The Reader’s much-loved Christmas Story Trail returns to Calderstones Park for its sixth year—this time inspired by Mr Santa, the heartwarming picture book by award-winning children’s author and illustrator, Jarvis.

Back by popular demand and extended to run until 31 December 2025, the annual self-led trail invites children and their grown-ups to explore Liverpool’s historic park through an enchanting story-themed adventure. The Manchester-based author said he is “thrilled” that Mr Santa—published by Walker Books in 2024—has been chosen as this year’s festive tale.

The story follows an inquisitive young girl who unexpectedly meets Santa in her home, giving her the perfect chance to ask the questions she’s always wondered about—making it ideal for curious three to seven-year-olds.

Running every Saturday and Sunday from 29 November to 31 December, with bookable time slots from 10am, the trail begins at The Reader Bookshop and takes around 60 minutes to complete. Families will follow a magical map featuring 12 clues inspired by the book, discovering festive surprises throughout the park. Each child receives a map, pencil and their very own copy of Mr Santa to take home.

Younger visitors can enjoy the Mini Christmas Trail, led by a Storyhunter every Friday, specially designed for toddlers aged one to four.

A highlight of this year’s programme will be a chance to Meet the Author on Sunday 7 December at 10am inside the Mansion House. Jarvis will give a special reading of Mr Santa before leading an interactive draw-a-long session.

Tickets cost £15 for one adult and one child in advance or £17 on the day, with small additional fees for extra adults and children. All proceeds support The Reader’s Shared Reading groups across Liverpool and the UK, helping bring the joy of reading to those who need it most.

Hot chocolate, private room hire for groups, and plenty of festive cheer will also be available from The Reader Bookshop.

More information and ticket bookings are available via The Reader’s website.
