Liverpool to Host Wheelchair Basketball European Championships 2027
Europe’s top wheelchair basketball teams will descend on Liverpool in September 2027 as the city hosts the IWBF Wheelchair Basketball European Championships, with qualification for the LA 2028 Paralympic Games on the line.
The IWBF Wheelchair Basketball European Championships 2027 (WBEURO27) will take place at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena from 11–19 September 2027, bringing some of the best wheelchair basketball players in Europe to the city for nine days of international competition.
It will be the first time the Championships have been staged in the UK since 2015 and the biggest wheelchair basketball event held on home soil in more than a decade.
And for anyone who hasn’t experienced wheelchair basketball live before, expect considerably more than a conventional game of basketball.
Fast breaks, hard-fought rebounds, rapid turns and full-contact chair collisions make it one of the fastest and most physical sports on the Paralympic programme. Possession can change in seconds and games can be decided right at the death.

The Road To LA 2028 Goes Through Liverpool
There will be much more than European silverware at stake when the teams arrive in Liverpool.
The Championships will play a key role in qualification for the LA 2028 Paralympic Games, giving Great Britain’s men’s and women’s teams the opportunity to fight for Paralympic qualification in front of a home crowd.
Both GB teams will arrive with plenty of pedigree. The men’s team won silver at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games – Great Britain’s best Paralympic result in wheelchair basketball for 28 years – having previously won the 2023 European Championship and the 2018 World Championship.
Great Britain’s women have also established themselves among Europe’s leading teams, winning European silver in both 2023 and 2025 and finishing fifth at Paris 2024.
Before attention turns to Liverpool, both teams are competing at the 2026 IWBF World Championships in Ottawa, Canada, as preparations continue towards another huge year in 2027.
Liverpool’s Abdi Jama could compete on home soil
There could also be a strong local connection for fans to get behind. Liverpool’s own Abdi Jama is part of the wider Great Britain squad, while Manchester-based Robyn Love, Laurie Williams and Henley Cavanagh are representing GB at the 2026 World Championships.
For Jama, the prospect of competing in a major international tournament in his home city makes Liverpool 2027 particularly special.
“As a player, to have an international tournament in my home city is incredible and a fantastic opportunity to showcase this amazing sport,” he said.
Great Britain star and Paris 2024 silver medallist Terry Bywater believes spectators experiencing wheelchair basketball for the first time are in for a memorable day out.
“Wheelchair basketball is incredibly fast, it’s physical, and there’s so much happening on court that you can barely take your eyes off the game,” he said.
“There’s the noise of the wheels, the collisions, the crowd and the speed of the players – it’s an incredible atmosphere.”

Tickets for the IWBF Wheelchair Basketball European Championships 2027 will be released in phases, beginning with all-event passes, which are on sale now.
Day ticket information will be announced at a later date.
With European titles and places at LA 2028 at stake, Liverpool is set for nine days of elite international wheelchair basketball at the M&S Bank Arena.
