Gig Preview: Formal Sppeedwear – Angular Art-Rock Clocks In On Jordan Street
Liverpool’s autumn gig calendar gains a particularly intriguing appointment on Tuesday 3 November, when Stoke-on-Trent trio Formal Sppeedwear bring their restless art-pop to District, armed with debut album Punch Card and a musical approach that should make for an absorbing evening in the Baltic Triangle. Presented by HSP, the date offers an opportunity to catch a band whose adventurous instincts are matched by an appreciation of rhythm, melody and the considerable pleasure of making people move.
Released through Melodic in September, Punch Card provides the backdrop to this visit. Across twelve tracks, the trio assemble a world of elastic bass, angular guitar and arrangements that change direction without much interest in signalling beforehand. Their music invites close attention, but its rhythmic foundations also suggest that standing thoughtfully at the back might prove only a temporary arrangement. At District, that combination promises an evening with plenty happening both onstage and out on the floor.
Bassist and vocalist Beck Clewlow, guitarist Charlie Ball and drummer Connor Wells form this three-piece. Their performances allow room for improvisation and changes within the songs, giving this Liverpool appearance an attraction beyond hearing familiar recordings reproduced. The interesting prospect is watching three musicians respond to one another as the material unfolds, finding the balance between a recognisable structure and the freedom to take a detour. A room where those exchanges can be followed closely should suit them well.
District’s intimate setting adds to the appeal. Music built around the interplay of three performers benefits from being experienced close enough to follow the individual contributions and feel their collective impact. With a debut album now released, this is a timely opportunity to encounter Formal Sppeedwear as their audience grows. For anyone looking to put something adventurous into an otherwise ordinary Tuesday evening, the journey to Jordan Street looks a worthwhile proposition.
