Liverpool Rising Against Racism Returns: Powerful Night of Music, Unity and Defiance At St George’s Hall

Liverpool’s long-standing tradition of resistance and solidarity will be centre stage on Saturday 17 May 2024, as Liverpool Rising Against Racism returns to the iconic St George’s Hall for an electrifying night of music, spoken word and community action.

The event is part of WoWFEST25: 25 Years of Radical Writing and draws inspiration from the legendary Rock Against Racism movement. Presented in partnership by Love Music Hate Racism, Writing on the Wall, and Liverpool City Halls, and supported by a coalition of trade unions, the evening promises to be both a cultural celebration and a political statement.

Kicking off with a rousing outdoor performance by samba-reggae drummers Batala Mersey, the night’s line-up showcases some of the UK’s most vital and uncompromising voices:

  • Skinnyman – the influential hip-hop artist whose groundbreaking Council Estate of Mind album remains a touchstone for social commentary.
  • Blue Saint – award-winning rapper, poet, and activist known for fusing artistry with advocacy.
  • Amina Atiq – acclaimed Yemeni–Scouse poet whose work tackles diaspora, identity, and resistance.
  • PJ Smith (Roy) – a Toxteth-born writer and performer delivering searing, honest reflections.
  • Sam Millne & the Virants – one of Liverpool’s most exciting rising bands, praised for their boundary-pushing sound.

The event has received strong backing from trade unions including the Fire Brigades Union, UNISON, UCU, and the National Education Union (NEU), who have each shared messages of solidarity. “This event demonstrates an alternative of hope, unity and solidarity,” said NEU’s Debs Gwynn, while Lee Hunter of the FBU added, “We are very proud and honoured to support Liverpool Rising Against Racism. Solidarity!”
