KingFast Preaches Singing Your Own ‘Praises’ In New Single

Following last December’s release of soulful track Activist (which you can read our review of here), Liverpool-based musician and singer-songwriter KingFast is back with his first new music of 2023, the brand-new single Praises.

Esteemed in the Liverpool music scene for his captivating live performance skills, KingFast’s notable past performances include Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF), Cannes Film Festival, Sound City, Edinburgh Fringe and Nantwich Jazz Festival, amongst others. The singer-songwriter’s past musical output has found him primarily working within the peripheries of Soul and R&B, yet KingFast effortlessly draws from other genres within his sonic palette, at times incorporating pop and hip-hop elements.

Released independently on 31 March, Praises is a gospel-inspired track “about hope and self love”: a more downtempo cut than the upbeat Activist, yet uplifting and soulful. Largely minimal instrumentation leaves plenty of room for KingFast’s expressive vocals to demand our primary focus. Mellow electric piano, crunchy drum fills and choir-like layered harmonies surround a passionate vocal delivery, with lyrics championing confidence and self-belief in your own potential: “This world drags you down, kicking and screaming” / “If no one’s gonna sing your praises, you’ve gotta sing them yourself”.

The bridge section switches up the tone with a different set of chords, before a final, elevated chorus and acapella outro draw the track to a powerful close with KingFast’s signature falsetto vocals. What a voice!

Praises is a superb follow up to last year’s Activist, with an optimistic and heartfelt message about being your own # 1 supporter. This new gospel sound appears to be something of a sonic departure, and yet another indication of KingFast’s musical versatility. It will be exciting to see what he has in store next and whether an EP or other musical project is in the works. Until then, check out the brand-new single Praises, available now wherever you stream music.
