Grace Ella Phillips Discusses Dreamy New Single ‘Forget It All’

Liverpool indie-folk singer Grace Ella Phillips has spoken to Liverpool Noise about the release of her new single Forget It All. Featuring dreamy guitar, angelic vocals and emotionally charged lyrics, the fully acoustic song has a raw and authentic feel that is typical of Grace’s sound.

Following the release of her debut single In The End last year and Strawberry Lip Balm earlier this year, Forget It All is an exciting addition to the singer songwriter’s discography so far.

Grace, who has been playing guitar since age 7, spoke about the recording process: “We recorded the song in one take last October. We left it completely acoustic with one mic recording both guitar and vocals. It’s a short song and we were originally going to edit it with a big ending – a bit like ‘Vortex’ by Lizzy McAlpine – but we realised we liked it how it is. It’s a nice choice I think. It sounds more like how I’d write in my room.”

The result is a genuine and heartfelt sound that is hauntingly beautiful.

Grace’s influences range from Phoebe Bridgers and Faye Webster to legends like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. While writing the EP that this track will feature on, she immersed herself in Adrianne Lenker’s album songs, calling it “gorgeous” and one of her all-time favourites. Fans of Lenker and Big Thief will find plenty to love in Forget It All.

Speaking of her writing process, Grace said “It depends on how I’m feeling and what’s happening in my life and what sort of melody or chord progression I’ve come up with but mostly, for the genre I like anyway, it’s always a little bit sad by accident. The lyrics just flow.”

Comparing the track with her previous singles, she said “It’s similar lyrically but it’s different because the one that I released in May is a lot more produced and was quite upbeat for me.” She laughed, “I’ve never written anything so upbeat before.”

“Sonically ‘Forget It All’ is different for the people who are listening to it but the lyrics are basically along the same lines. It’s just about forgetting about a past relationship and having to let that go.”

Grace studied Songwriting and Performance in Manchester. Now back in Liverpool, she looks forward to taking on the Liverpool music scene. She intends to release an EP soon with tracks including both Forget It All and Strawberry Lip Balm.

Forget It All is available on all streaming platforms now.
