One Night Stand; Liverpool Light Night 2014 Preview

Liverpool has a tendency, at times, to hide its creative light under a bushel. There are so many venues that put on arts and cultural events that you’ve never heard of. Some high-brow, some much more accessible.

During Capital of Culture year, some people complained about the programme, despite it being vast and covering almost every type of event you could possibly think of. They said ‘That’s not culture to me’ or ‘Well, that’s not my kind of thing’. But the point is that, not just for big high profile gigs like Capital of Culture, there is always something going on, something that will move you, inspire you or just make you think; you’ve just got to know it’s there. Culture means very different things to people and rightly so.

That’s partly the point of Light Night which returns for its fifth year on 16th May. For the one-night festival, galleries, museums and heritage sites will be open to everyone, with over 150 events on offer across more than 70 venues. Most events are free and there is always a huge range of things to do: family events, music, dance, exhibitions, workshops and street events.

You could find yourself watching a light projection show or dancing in the street or exploring the Anglican cathedral by candlelight. Last year there was a ceilidh at St George’s Hall, glitter throwing at Baltic Creative and a comedy coach tour amongst a hugely diverse list.

The programme will be released on 1st April and we’ll be picking out some of the best and most interesting then. We’ll also be going along to as many of the events as we can and we’ll tell you about them here.

In the meantime, their website is lightnightliverpool.co.uk and you can pre-register to receive the programme when it’s available.
