The Ancient Chapel of Toxteth and Its Link to The Salem Witch Trials
On the corner of Park Road and Dingle Lane sits The Ancient Chapel of Toxteth. What makes this chapel so interesting is its link to the Salem Witch Trials. Richard Mather was the chapel’s first minister and he later emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts. Mather’s son Increase Mather and grandson Cotton Mather later became known for their involvement in the infamous Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s, which you can read more about here.
William MacKenzie’s Pyramid Tomb
Now this has to be one of the most unique places in Liverpool. No doubt locals will have passed William MacKenzie’s famous tombstone many times and if you’ve been on a Shiverpool Ghost Tour then you’ll be familiar with the story behind it. MacKenzie was an avid gambler and left instructions that he should be entombed above ground within the pyramid, sitting upright at a card table and clutching a winning hand of cards.
