Zara Smile’s ‘Fight Back’ Is an Anthem of Vulnerability and Strength
Liverpool’s emerging alt-folk talent Zara Smile has dropped their new single Fight Back today – a powerful track that connects listeners deeply with raw, inner emotion. The artist is also one of four musicians to be chosen for Come Play With Me Records’ Next Up North: the first artist development scheme dedicated to supporting northern artists of underrepresented genders and sexualities.
Smile’s smooth and expressive vocals pair perfectly with the authentic lyricism within Fight Back. From the opening lines, there is no doubt this song was created from the soul with genuine feelings behind it. Because of this, Zara is able to build an unspoken bond with their listeners. With its delicate instrumentation and blend of layered melodies, this track is not one to miss out on.
Merging vulnerability with lyrical clarity, the single explores themes of self-doubt and fear of failure within the creative industry. The line, “Would things be easier if I were a man” highlights the misogyny and discrimination towards marginalised genders and sexual orientations within society. At its core, Fight Back is a song about musicians pushing past their imposter syndrome and never giving up on their goals, implying that success comes along with persistence.
For fans of artists like Joni Mitchell and Laura Marling, Smile offers a new, yet timeless voice in the alt-folk landscape.
