The Double Nines Nail The Breakup Anthem With ‘Cold Courtesy’

The Double Nines return with what may be their most emotionally charged track to date. Cold Courtesy captures that bittersweet moment we all dread—bumping into an ex when all that remains is polite smiles and unspoken memories. But in true The Double Nines fashion, the heartbreak comes wrapped in jangly guitars, glistening synths, and a chorus built for summer road trips.

Frontman Anthony Barrios turns a painful personal breakup into something relatable, cinematic, and even euphoric. His lyrics hit with the sentimentality of early 2000s rom-coms, but it’s the vibrant instrumentation— Smiths-esk—that elevates Cold Courtesy into anthem territory.

Mixed by Dave Boothroyd (Chris Helme, Shed Seven), the track finds a perfect balance between melancholy and momentum.

To celebrate the release, The Double Nines travelled to some of Liverpool’s most iconic attractions to make allusions to famous rom-coms that served as comfort films for the songwriter. From cue cards referencing Love Actually, record store settings hinting at (500) Days, and journal confessions in the style of Ruby Sparks, the band not only recreate nostalgia, but also encourage listeners to support each other during times of emotional distress.

The band has also launched a cheeky video series helping Anthony “get back out there” by revamping his dating app profiles, alongside interviews with everyday romantics on the streets of Liverpool for a heartfelt (and hilarious) “How To Get Over Your Ex” guide.

As the band builds buzz ahead of their UK tour (kicking off 17 October at LEAF, Liverpool), Cold Courtesy cements The Double Nines as one of the most exciting new voices in indie rock, with their viral videos and emotionally intelligent songwriting marking them as ones to watch.
